After the magnificent success of The Lord of the Rings movies, there was a whole flood of the Middle Earth-themed games during the entire previous decade. Most of the games, though, were inspired by Peter Jackson’s movies and all of them administrated the direct approach towards the enemies. The latest game that took place in Tolkien’s world was a sequel to Shadow of War. That’s why the announcement of another Lord of the Rings game that will feature Gollum as a protagonist came as a surprise.
The game is made by Daedalic Entertainment, which made a deal with Middle Earth Enterprises, a company which holds rights to the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The Gollum game is just the first game produced as part of the deal and further games are being planned. This game will be a story-focused adventure game and it will have the famous double-personal, treacherous creature with signature cough as a protagonist. Concerning the story, it will take place between the moment Gollum found The One Ring and the beginning of the Lord of the Rings.
Unlike most of the other games which took inspiration from Peter Jackson’s movies, Gollum game will be purely based on Tolkien’s books. CEO and founder of Daedalic, Carsten Fichtelmann explained that Gollum was chosen as the protagonist because there is already a preexisting conflict in his character. There are already two voices in his head convincing him about what decision to make, and that is something that gives his character a necessary dynamic.
The projected timeframe of release for the Lord of the Rings: Gollum is 2021, and The Game is planned for PC and “all relevant console platforms at that time”, which implies the next generation consoles do. Curious enough, the same year Amazon’s the Lord of the Rings television series will air. It seems that 2021 will be the year The Lord of the Rings became hot property again.
