Arcane Showdown, the battle arena game that came to PC earlier in 2020, arrived now on both Android and iOS platforms for mobile gaming and the game couldn’t look better! It features all of the cool gameplay, epic battles, spells, real-time strategy, and it truly looks virtually the same as its PC counterpart. So, what’s the secret?

Development and reception

Arcane Showdown

This game is in early access via Steam since February 25, 2020. It is developed and published by Big Huge Games Inc and it marked their first Steam entry. The game has a Mostly Positive review average there. However, the studio has dished out one more mobile game called DomiNations on Android.

Arcane Showdown just arrived on mobile, so it is a bit too early to have a large enough vote sample for a score, but reviews are generally positive and on the iTunes App Store they average around 4.4 stars. The game is offered by Big Huge Games Inc on Android, but Nexon handled the publishing for iOS as they did on DomiNations.

Atmosphere

Arcane Showdown

As arena games go, this title has it all, all the hallmarks of Clash Royale, with some shades of League of Legends if its appearance even. But, it is a dueling game and it achieves its atmosphere primarily through its representation of magic.

The players take the role of a powerful arcane-wielding sorcerer who, besides his magical might and spells, also needs to employ strategy, summon creatures, create all sorts of powerful helpers and heroes, and compose a powerful deck of tricks to beat the levels.

Gameplay

Arcane Showdown

Arcane Showdown is a cross between the MOBA genre and a real-time strategy, with Idle elements and some more familiar and some other perhaps less familiar mechanics. From the high towers of the Mages Citadels, you take your place among the archmages to whom physics and reality are just tools and canvas to be molded into their whims.

The core of the gameplay lies in dueling, as you generally play against the level or a player, but again against his structures and strategically placed combat resources. There are Online PvP and Co-op support, and this game is even a Cross-platform multiplayer experience.

Arcane Showdown features elements of CCG (card collector games) as each player builds a deck of spells, skills, and summons, while the setting even takes a lot from tower defense. Buildings are also a big part of the gameplay, as the players spend mana to summon, build, and cast.

This battle arena game offers a really refreshing mix of genres because it takes all the best parts of tower defense, card collector, real-time strategy, idle, fantasy, and much more. OF course, there are also many features outside of combat, where you build your deck, level up your heroes, learn new powers, etc…

Combat

Arcane Showdown

Staying true to the “Showdown” in Arcade Showdown, combat is really a clean duel between two sides, both well versed in high magical power. The player is represented as a mage, usually standing on a floating Pedestal, and your various structures i.e. towers in front. The enemy, be it player-controlled or NCP is on the opposite side.

Now, you both have your territory within which you can summon your armies and use your spells. But, while you can’t cast spells outside of your range, your armies can invade enemy territory. Both sides have their cards, which cost mana to play, the hallmark of the CCG genre.

Throughout the battlefield, there will be Mana Veins spawns, which need to be enchanted to increase your mana flow. Enchanting costs mana, but it is a necessary investment. In fact, everything costs mana in combat, and the resource is replenished over time depending on Veins and other stuff.

The goal is to destroy all of the enemy’s structures to earn Victory Stars, and eventually destroy the enemy wizard’s pedestal and win. When you summon armies, they will automatically march forward and attack enemy structures or armies in range.

Cards have tiers, and the higher tier will bring more powerful stuff to use. Each match begins at tier I and you progress as you enchant more Mana Veins and destroy enemy buildings and towers. While the first couple of duels might look simple, the match can become quite intricate and a very interesting wizards’ duel.

Graphics

Arcane Showdown

As mentioned, Arcane Showdown is a superior visual experience on mobile, as it uses its assets to the highest possible extent. The graphics and textures are incredibly detailed, while lighting, models, and animations pop off the touch screen.

Tech Compatibility

Arcane Showdown

The only drawback to this might be that the game is not released currently globally, so depending on your area you might only be able to pre-register. But it is coming soon worldwide. It requires Android 6.0 and up or iOS 10.o and up. It also may be a bit demanding GPU-wise.

Free-to-play Friendly

Arcane Showdown

Monetization is currently not too present in this game, speaking for early access. The game is completely free to download and play and it offers in-app purchases, but they are mostly focused on gem top-ups, which is the game’s premium currency.

Verdict

Arcane Showdown

Arcane Showdown brings a multitude of traditional genres, all mixed up in a visually superior presentation. You have elements of card collector, idle, both turn-based and real-time strategy, arena games and it uses it all to its maximum advantage. It is definitely something to explore, as it offers an engaging single and multiplayer experience. The only catch is that it may not still be released in your area, but it is definitely coming soon and I recommend pre-registering in that case.
