Arena Allstars auto chess-inspired mobile game is one of the latest “autobattlers” on the market. The game takes a pretty serious approach to the genre’s mechanics and rules, and all that entitles, but also takes a kind of comedic and fun approach to it all, mainly to the units and detail design. These games do have a committed following all over the world and, like all its predecessors, the community had to try it out, so this is the sum of the feedback thus far…
Development and reception
The game is offered by Match Set Games and being an Auto Chess play style game, it is also a blend of strategy and real-time battles. However, this title also brings in fantasy into the pot, and not in terms of what’s common today. It offers its own blend of kind of a fairytale, old school ‘90s fantasy atmosphere. The game is currently in early access on Google Play, while it is being developed for iOS as well. So, this is a call for all who enjoy this gameplay style to try it out. It has over 10k installs so far, with its last update being on September 21, 2019, and it is free-to-play with in-app purchases. This is the only title Match Set Games currently has on Google Play, but it looks like an ambitious project for sure.
Arena Allstars is an auto chess game in its core, like so many others in what is now a genre in and of itself. However, it does take some slight detours compared to DOTA Underlords and the likes. Here, the total pool of players competing in a single game is 8, and as it is now tradition, the quick matchup pits each and everyone against them until there is only one standing at the end. The total health pool is 100 for each participant, and based on the outcome of the match, the player will either take damage or deal damage. The damage itself is calculated by the number and types of units on the field, so far all familiar mechanics.
However, besides the usual quick Free-for-All matchup, this game offers a Teamfight Co-Op mode, which is a new thing. The matches are still quick and short in both modes, and the entire game shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes, with the winner being the one who will spend the most time playing.
While some other auto chess inspired games are built for multiple platforms and as a result, the gameplay experience might not be ideal for either of them, Arena Allstars is built solely for mobile gaming. Thus, the matchup and the entire process of setting up is noticeably quicker and runs smoothly. Furthermore, Match Set Games also expanded on the experience by offering Monthly Tournaments and engaging content to keep the experience alive and more diverse. Furthermore, a great deal of time and effort was invested into optimizing the game’s UI and ease-of-access, so it can even be played with one hand with no downsides.
Apart from that, the game features all the familiar mechanics where you collect your champions from a pool of different races, classes, and each with different abilities and alignments. As it is traditional for this genre, alignment combinations are crucial and offer bonuses depending on the number of troops aligned.
Graphics and appearance
Contrary to similar games, your troops here are actually called pets and the entire game has somewhat of a fantasy feeling. However, it is in no way any less serious in its delivery. In fact, this game looks a lot better than many others of this style, with its 3D semi-realistic models, high-end graphics, and fine rendering. At first glance, it might look minimalistic, but a closer look will reveal much more.
Arena Allstars characters are also a big part of the gameplay experience, as mentioned, but are also showcasing the best part of the game’s appearance. You have everything from teddy bears, women with butterfly wings, to demons and unearthly creatures, and the representation adds to the atmosphere greatly.
Arena Allstars mobile is an improvement on the currently popular auto chess extravaganza. The game does honor what has already become a tradition in these types of games, but expands where there is a place for it. Particularly, the addition of the Co-Op feature and exploring the fantasy atmosphere is what gives this title its unique and fresh feeling, while it also improves the game design compared to the competition. It is currently in early access, so if you are a fan of the new-wave, give it a shot.
