We all love Larian, right? Their Divinity RPG has owned its respective portion of the old school hype for the genre and today they enjoy well-earned respect. They are founded in 1996 in Belgium, by a guy called Swen Vincke, and they are almost entirely focusing on RPGs. Their Divinity series began in 2002, with the release of Divine Divinity, which spawned three more games: Beyond Divinity, Divinity 2, Divinity: Original Sin (prequel to the story), Divinity Original Sin 2, and Divinity: Dragon Commander ( a spin-off). Needles to say Divinity: Original Sin and its respective sequel won them the marked over again, but now, their website shows something strange.
Their official homepage, Larian.com, started showing this in the past few hours. The roman three is speculated to be either one of these two things: The next Divinity: Original Sin title or, and this is what got people really hyped, Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3? Wait a minute…
In the past 24 hours, the internet exploded. Some are calling this a Baldur’s Gate III teaser, others are admittedly only spreading rumors, and the rest are debating if Larian is good enough to take on the job and bring the sacred, holiest of holy RPGs to present times. Well, let’s try and answer those inquiries.
According to a very long and hot post on Reddit, which you can read by clicking here, honest forum dwellers are admitting it is only a rumor. However, it is the names of the files in the code shown in the initial post that has gotten everybody hyped up, and the names mentioned are:
- Wizards of the Coast
- Baldur’s Gate
- Larian Studios
- Their respective logos
We were poking around the video ourselves and haven’t found what they were talking about but a lot of people tested it before us and swear on the legitimacy. As the case might be, Larian removed the code lines that contained the keywords.
While everyone is respecting each other’s opinion and the comments for the post are very politely reaching four figures, these are what they generally say…
Larian has managed to establish a kind of respect among the serious RPG fans, critics, and lovers. People are saying that IF Larian studio were to really take on Baldur’s Gate 3, they have their permission and blessing to take the hand of BG3. However, people also gave honorable mentions to Obsidian and to Black Isle Studios themselves.
Black Isle Studios – In Memoriam
Black Isle is behind such RPG old school hits as Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, and of course the Baldur’s Gate PC game series. However, right after they announced Baldur’s Gate III: The Black Hound, the company bankrupted and disappeared in 2003. They emerged briefly in 2012, then disappeared again, then in 2016 the news about them selling all of their intellectual property and video game assets to an undisclosed party.
Now, Larian may be the one to take up the mantle and continue the sacred journey of developing and publishing awesome Role Playing Games. However, all we have is this roman number III posted on their site and quite frankly, keeping us in the dark like this, teasing and playing with our wildest dreams is…well, enjoyed by everybody it seems. None of the potential companies involved is saying anything more, not Larian, not Black Isle ghosts, nor even Ed Green Wood who is the designer of the Forgotten Realms campaign story for the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy RPG (D&D), to which universe the story for Baldur’s Gate series revolves in.
We are eagerly awaiting an answer about Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 3 hype from any of these people…
In the meantime, Wizards of the Coast have announced a new campaign titled Baldur’s Game: Descent Into Avernus, release date set at September 17, 2019, so there is that…
