Darksiders is the series you notice in trailers and then start biting your nails from anticipation to play it. It looks great, the story is great, and the artwork is amazing.
Maybe this is because the man behind the series is Joe Madureira, a comic book writer and artist who worked on Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men, Deadpool, Avenging Spider-Man and Inhuman, to name a few. He is also one of the people in the American comic book industry frequently credited for using elements of the Japanese manga style in the Western art, thus creating unique artwork that is now hugely accepted all over the world.
But Madureira’s work on Darksiders as a creative director may be the most memorable so far. After all, this is a game that gets your adrenaline pumping just by watching the trailers. The first one appeared in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows, while its enhanced version was released in 2016.
The game is a hack and slash action adventure created by Vigil Games, formed by Joe Madureira, Marvin Donald, Ryan Stefanelli and David Adams in 2005. In 2006, Vigil Games became part of THQ, which declared bankruptcy in 2012 and started liquidating its assets. Nordic Games bought the Darksiders franchise, while the Vigil Games weren’t so lucky.
Later on, David Adams founded Gunfire Games in 2014 and Joe Madureira founded Airship Syndicate in 2015, which hired most of the former Vigil Games employees. The Darksiders franchise continued to be developed by Gunfire Games and published by THQ Nordic (Nordic Games US subsidiary) from 2015.
Hooked on a story
The main story is about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse – War, Death, Fury, and Strife, who are the last Nephilim. They were tasked by the Charred Council to find other Nephilims and kill them in order to bring balance back to the Universe.
First Darksiders start in the modern day, when the apocalyptic war between Heaven and Hell ensues on Earth. War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is killed during one of the battles, and because of his participation, the Charred Council accuses him of starting the chaos in the first place. Enraged by the wrongful accusation, War goes back to Earth after 100 years to find out who is really responsible.
The second installment was released in 2012 for Microsoft Windows, Wii U, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The narrative is set at the same time as the first part, only the main character is another Horsemen of the Apocalypse – Death. In order to clear his brother’s name, Death goes to Earth to restore humanity.
Time for Fury
Darksiders III may be the best looking until now, and not only because it is slated to show up on November 27 this year for Microsoft Windows, PS4, and Xbox One. And let me tell you, we can’t wait to meet the third Horsemen, Fury, with her flamboyant red hair and a look that can kill.
The Charred Council’s mission this time is to eliminate the Seven Deadly Sins and restore the balance between good and evil, something apparently others failed to do. Unlike War’s sword Chaoseater, and Death’s two scythes, Fury will use a whip and magic to fight her enemies.
One of the forms Fury can take in the game is Flame Hollow, which not only looks menacing but also promises some great battles. And doing all that in high heels and really amazing outfit only makes us more anxious to play the heroine of this new video game.
The game will have a few special editions that will be a real treat for the fans, including the 11-inch Fury statue in the standard edition for $149.99. If you want to buy Apocalypse Edition with three 11-inch statues of Death, War, and Vulgrim the shopkeeper you will have to pay $399.99. This edition will also include the standard edition’s items, so don’t worry, you will have your Fury statue as well. Other collectibles are 30 by 40-inch wall scroll and Four Horsemen amulet. The game is available for pre-order now, and there are more videos of gameplay to come in the future, just to keep us on our toes.
Are you ready to join the Horsemen?
If you haven’t played the game before, then this is a perfect time to start, since there are about four months until Darksiders 3 arrives. The gameplay uses a third-person perspective, offers puzzles to solve, and an open world to explore on amazing horses.
Joe Madureira mentioned in an interview a possibility to develop Darksiders into a comic book series, as well as that Hollywood showed interest in the characters and story as well. These are great news and we hope that a movie is on the way, since it could really look great and should be interesting for the wider audience.
I just hope that it will avoid the destiny of World of Warcraft adaptation and be more careful with the narrative. It’s not all about the good looks of CGI and motion capture – the story is what matters, too. After all, that’s what got us hooked on the Darksiders in the first place. Well, at least me.
