Elemental Dungeon Review

Elemental Dungeon is an interesting new roguelike dungeon crawler that greatly expands on the genre, and it does so with its experimental gameplay features. The main catch it uses is the combination of the elements to produce various skill effects or spells, but even beyond this the game expands upon the familiar genre combination and pushes the skill bar even higher. The title looks interesting even at first glance, but just below the surface awaits a whole world of possibilities…

Story

As with most dungeon crawlers, the story is pretty straight forward. You play an aspiring adventurer, you choose the name, and you go on the journey of discovering and learning new skills. You are introduced to the world by an elder wizard and he points you to the ever-changing dungeons you need to traverse and cleanse of all enemies.

Gameplay

It is at this aspect that the game truly shines. Elemental Dungeon gameplay is categorized as a dungeon crawling roguelike adventure, but the mechanics are completely innovative and unique. As the game title suggests, you play with elementals, combining them into powerful spells and skills. This still does not sound like it describes enough the amount of depth you can go when mastering the skills.]

Namely, you can pick up different elements through your journeys, choosing only to keep three of them. Those are Earth, Fire, and Water. Each of them provides you with some basic ability, like casting Fireballs, Water Shields, dousing Fire, and creating Barricades from Earth. But, they can also all be combined between themselves to produce up to 6 spell combinations. For instance Fire and Earth give you Meteor Shower spell. Plus, you can also learn new spells from scrolls and by upgrading the elements.

However, and this is where the game asks for your skill, you only hold on to a selected element or combination of elements while you mix them as you go. As soon as you let go of your cast button, the elements are back to their original form, or at least the basic form you possess. You can also use essence to upgrade your elements, thus producing even greater spells and different manifestations. All these are then, as explained, mixed up together on the go, as you dodge projectiles and fight monsters, giving the game an uncanny dangerous pace and a high skill cap.

Graphics

As all good roguelike games, 2D pixel art is the way to go, and Elemental Dungeon obliges. It gives the game a certain simple but deceptive look. Also, the animations, spells, and overall feeling of the game are quite old school, which is reminiscent of the fan favorites, namely Zelda 2D games. And, as well as those oldies we all love and remember, it is challenging as hell.
