Figment: Journey Into the Mind, surreal musical adventure, is an enthusiastic new look at the action-adventure genre, where the game is set into a human mind. Yes, that is correct. Our own fears, negative thoughts, but also brightness and positive impulses come to play in a game that perhaps touches even psychology and neuropsychology slightly. The entire gameplay is also, additionally, based upon music, which gives everything a stylish twist and makes it that much more interesting. The game is only out on iOS just recently so here’s how it’s doing, and its highlights…
Development and Reception
This game is brought to us by Bedtime Digital Games, an indie developer from Denmark, which actually started out in 2011 as a student production. That group of students was onto something when they were developing a game that caught the attention of some press, and with the help of Kickstarter funding, they evolved into a genuine studio in 2013. They are behind such titles as Back to Bed and Chronology: Time Changes Everything. On the iTunes App Store, Figment: Journey Into the Mind iOS holds very well with a 4.1-star rating so far. The game is free-to-play and offers in-App purchases.
As mentioned, Figment iOS uses this premise to present to us a surreal and strange world, filled with our thoughts, memories, and naturally bothersome inner voices that never cease. In Figment, the mind that was once still and tranquil is now changed for the worse. New thoughts begin to emerge, which are personified as nightmarish creatures spreading fear throughout the mind and controlling it for its dark purposes. We come into play as Grumpy Dusty, a voice of courage…or former courage. We must help Dusty regain his former courage and glory and help the mind to face the fears.
The gameplay does take us to the action-adventure genre, sure, but the game’s relying message is not that far from the truth. Plus, it will challenge us with puzzles and intricate new gameplay mechanics, rarely seen in any title whatsoever, so check it out on Thursday. In its basis, you could say that this title is rooted in the gameplay of old school puzzlers like Grim Fandango and Monkey Island series. The scenery and the surreal world of our minds are the playing field and everything can be used as a potential means to overcome a certain puzzle or a certain enemy.
The whimsical world has been brought to life with hand-drawn animations, colorful scenery, and funny visual mechanics. Everything is alive, the objects especially, as all that’s presented to us plays an important part in the gameplay. That is why graphics, models, and textures are very important here and are very well done indeed. Not to mention how music affects everything and plays an instrumental part in it all.
Representing a new concept developed by an indie studio, this game is tailored to the style Bedtime Digital Games has already established as their own. They’ve delved into the dream world and into the aspect of time as a concept before in their games, and here they just show how deeper they’ve gotten and how more articulate it has all become. Figment: Journey Into the Mind iOS is definitely a refreshing take on gaming in general, as it also catches the poetry of the human mind, thoughts, and, as an extension, our lives. The dream world is all so important to everybody, and video games are the product of the human imagination, which is why it makes it an obvious correlation if you think about it.
