There are some genres of the games which were made especially for the mobile phones, as HOPAs or physics-based games like Angry Birds. Among those games, you might notice a group which is connected by the common word “flip” in the title. The games like Flip Diving, Flip Master and this one represent a very simple formula which produces extremely fun and addictive games.
Flip Skater is not an exception either. It’s quite simplistic, but you will not be able to put it down once you get the hang of it. The game puts you in the role of a skater who rides the halfpipe and reaches high scores by doing tricks. As you advance through the game you will get more and more tricks but also new halfpipes to try those tricks on. Like in all “flip” games, you have three different things to unlock. The first thing you can change is the skater but unlike other two games, the roster is made from pretty ordinary skater stereotypes with different stats for speed, jump, and spin. It would be more interesting if among selectable characters you could pick a morbidly obese guy, a businessman, a Ninja or Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The other upgradeable feature is the board itself. You have a wide array of skateboards to choose from, with different design and decals, but also the different specifications to unlock. Make sure that you skate in style. The third and the last thing to upgrade are locations. You can travel the world and choose your favorite location to skate, starting with Miami Beach to Baikal Lake. Each stage has its own set of ramps and other elements you can skate over. Advancing through the game you can unlock and perform insane trick combinations, by reaching insane heights and pulling off the most dangerous stunts.
All the unlocks and upgrades you get in this game are being given via lottery, which you pay by the coins you gather while you’re doing tricks. You have one free lottery spin every day and the rewards are quite random, including a bunch of coins, new board designs, new skateboarders, new tricks or new playgrounds.
The gameplay is as simple as it can be. By pressing the screen you slide your character down the half pipe and when he leaps in the air you rotate him by pressing and holding the screen. It is very important to time the rotation well so your character lands the trick. It’s really important to align the board with the ground before you land, or else your character will suffer a horrific fall. The fall animations are equally hilarious and painful looking, and you will probably deliberately make mistakes so you can watch your character spectacularly falling over.
Flip Skater is one of those games that you will start for “just one more play” and then stayed glued to the screen until your eyesight starts to get blurry. It is quick, simple, but dangerously addictive and you will enjoy trying to up the hi-score and do crazier tricks on the halfpipe.
