Due to the immense popularity of Fortnite Battle Royale mode, many players are not even aware that there is also a PvE mode called Save the World. Indeed, Save the World is greatly overshadowed by the Battle Royale, one of the reasons for that being free to play status of the later. However. Epic Games announced that it won’t be happening this year.
The developer published the blog post, which says that they’re working on a “broad set of features, reworks, and backend system scaling”. They believe that those changes are crucial for going free to play. Although Save the World has significantly grown since it’s launch in July 2017, these elements are still not ready for a fully free to play release. The blog says that scaling-up the legions of player heroes who will be joining the fight is the key to provide a superior gaming experience. Consequently, Epic Games have no intention to hurry it up with the balancing of this game.
Save the World is already getting enhanced with an overhauled Hero System, which is supposed to give players more flexibility and customization of loadouts. Hero’s slots will be doubled from three to six, and the developer says they’re looking to expand the variety of loadouts you can create. We still have to see the details about that, and Epic says they will have more information to reveal very soon.

Epic says that this week Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Limited Founder’s packs for Save the World will go half the price. Hopefully, that would be enough to satisfy the players before Save the World goes officially free to play in the next year.
