When a group of talented French indie developers calls themselves The Game Bakers you know that you can expect something unusual, stylish, original and unconventionally delicious from them. The previous title by these gaming patisseries was Furi, an unusual and highly satisfying hack and slash, adrenaline-infused all-boss fighting game (it’s a mouthful, we know) which they released in 2016 for PC and PlayStation 4. After that, diligent bakers were obviously quite busy with their next achievement, picking some of the best ingredients from Fury, mixing them with some new ones, and lovingly putting everything in a well-greased baking tray. Now, judging from a teaser trailer they’ve just released into the world, Haven, their latest creation is just about to pop from their red-hot oven and tickle the taste buds of gamers around the world.
The dapper trailer shows some unusual alien world, mostly barren-looking, with pale-green grass tranquility swaying in the foreground and striking crimson and violet rock formations in the background. It also introduces our two protagonists, a handsome pair of sweethearts on their stroll through this (deceptively) uninhabited planet. This wouldn’t be unusual at all, except for the fact that they are actually flying, leaving some sort of glittery, energy contrail in their wake. Now, I don’t know whether these love birds have some special powers (they do say that love is uplifting) or this is just some sort of high-tech propulsion installed in their space exploration boots, but I have to admit that I can’t wait to find out more.
Although the trailer does show you a mouth-watering morsel of the things you can visually expect from the game, it also properly mysterious so doesn’t quite manage to convey much that’s really meaningful. Thankfully, developers had decided to divulge a bit more about their upcoming creation. In their own words, “Haven is an Adventure RPG about everyday love, rebelling against the rules and also, food. You play as two lovers who escaped to a lost planet. The only thing that matters to them is to stay together. The game will be available for PC and Consoles, and you will be able to play it solo, or with a special someone.”
Of course, this piece of info provided by the devs still isn’t too much, although they promise they’ll soon share more things with us. One thing is certain, though. I’m willing to bet that the title Heaven is a bit ironic, so don’t expect some raunchy sci-fi version of The Blue Lagoon set in the outer space. It’s obvious that the exploration will play a great part in the gameplay, but that won’t be everything this game will be able to offer you. Judging by the several screenshots we’ve got, this planet isn’t so abandoned after all, so in the pauses between their romantic smooching sessions under breathtakingly starry violet skies, our couple will be forced to fight with some sort of hostile aliens.
Although it’s too early to speculate about the particulars of the combat system, it’s evident that you’ll have different offensive and defensive options in your arsenal. Screenshots also show structures that perhaps resemble the remnants of some alien civilization, as well as conversational moments with (hopefully) well-developed dialogue options. As for the visual style, it’s actually quite fetching, with a pronounced Anime influence in the treatment of characters. When the game will appear? Well, although the authors say that they’ve been busy working on it for the whole two years, they obviously have much work to do, because the official release date on their Steam page and The Game Bakers site says it won’t be before 2020. We can hope that their next reveal will provide us with some more concrete facts about the game. Perhaps we may even be so bold to expect a demo in the foreseeable future? Let’s wait some more and see what we’ll get. Ah, the things we do for love and some nice alien ass-kicking action.
