Most people are familiar with Garfield, a lazy orange cat who likes lasagna and lying around all day. That’s why the idea to make an endless run game with Garfield as a runner seems a bit silly. However, this game is quite good and perfectly fulfills the intended goal, which is children’s fun.
So why would Garfield run in the first place? The reason is food, of course. At the beginning of the game, Garfield was getting ready to enjoy his snack, when a cunning black cat called Harry run past him and snatched his breakfast. Without any time to think it over, Garfield hit the pavement and chased after him.
If you ever played any game of this type you know what to expect. There are three lanes with obstacles and the main character who has to traverse through as far as he can, gathering coins and cards for the food, new characters, better equipment, and new costumes.
The gameplay itself is nothing we haven’t seen before, excluding the feeling of wonder because the runner is the most unlikely character of all time. There are several kinds of obstacles, some of them can be only avoided, some can be jumped over and some can be slid under. There are even trucks with sand Garfield can jump on and use them as a shortcut. As you progress through the game the number of obstacles will raise, as well as the game’s speed, so it might become more challenging than expected.
If the ideal Garfield running seems too far-fetched for you, you can unlock two more characters to play with, Oddie and Nermal, both much more energetic than the titular character. Except for new characters, you can unlock new costumes for all three of the runners. There are 18 costumes to unlock, all of them with in-game purchases. But there is more, as players can unlock various types of food Garfield and friends can munch. Among the specialties, there are lasagna, spaghetti, Neapolitan pizza, hot dogs, burritos, fried chicken and more.
Overall, Garfield Rush is a simple and fun game with some pesky free-to-play elements. The fans of Garfield will be in wonder seeing their favorite character actually run more than a few steps.
