Harbingers – Last Survival mobile game came out in September and it is a semi-idle blend of strategy and RPG, but, in our opinion, it is a zombie game with style. This title combines the popular zombie-fighting genre with several other popular gaming genres like RPG, turn-based strategy, collecting, and den evolution. And, most importantly, it brings incredibly cool anime-style visuals, which is what gives a nice twist to it all, at least at first glance.
Development and reception
This game is developed and published by Wanda Cinemas Games for Android users only and September 17 was the release date. Harbingers – Last Survival iOS is, as of now, still not in any of the developer’s plans. On Google Play though, the game enjoys quite the success having a current 4.6-star score out of over 14k votes. It is being praised with overly positive reviews on all sides and is quite the popular download, being free-to-play but with in-app purchases and ads of course. The creator of the title is an indie studio hailing from China.
Our favorite thing about this title is its story setting and its characters. Mainly, the narrative is actually along the lines of the traditional story every zombie game has. Zombie virus has spread, zombies are roaming the world, and survivors gather up to fry and beat them. But, the Harbingers i.e. those last survivors are in fact very cool and powerful women. They each have their own skillset and look amazing, traditional to the Japanese anime style of appearance.
As mentioned, this game has a particular blend of mixed genres and styles. It is, in its core, a familiar zombie game. You have your sanctuary which you protect and from which you plan your actions. Also, you can check and evolve your characters there, equip them, and organize your teams. Battle is being handled in an idle manner, similar to the turn-based strategy method, only the player has no control over the characters. All you do is set up the team, the rest is done automatically, as you watch the combat.
Harbingers – Last Survival characters is the point at which this game separates from the traditional canon of all the genres it includes and snatches its own particular style. This does not just go in visuals and animations. The colorful characters differ from one another greatly and pose an endless array of possibilities for players to tailor their own gameplay style, which is a big part of the allure of this game.
The player takes the role of a commander and as you evolve your den, you increase and collect your heroines. The player increases his Summon Quality, which will affect the heroes you can summon and their quality level. There are also other opportunities for rewards and resources. In fact, the game boasts of a very intricate reward opportunity pool. It has hundreds of featured harbingers, all with unique abilities and skills.
To supplement the amount of grinding necessary for encompassing such a large content pool for both characters and other features, the developers have chosen to add the Offline search feature. It allows the player to perform offline searches of areas in the game, which will award gear or resources, and other rewards. It is a kind of an idle grinding if you will.
Graphics and appearance
The characters, i.e. harbingers, all look amazing, with 3D models done with incredible details. They are all unique, distinct, and look very attractive, to be honest. All of the female heroes also have their own personality, made clear during the character interactions and dialogue. This raises the immersive quality of the game by a huge margin and also helps the narrative, which is at its basic level quite common, again as it is traditional for zombie games. The abilities, animations, and the scenery are all also rendered nicely and give this game a fresh, next-gen look.
Harbingers – Last Survival mobile game certainly justifies its popularity and high scores on Google Play. The game takes the traditional zombie game setting, spices it up with hundreds of heroic and attractive female characters, and ties it all up with quite a wide content. A recipe for success as it seems, as the Chinese indie developer Wanda Cinemas Games managed to surpass Chinese enormous market and grow outside their borders.
