Merula Snyde

Merula Snyde is one of the main characters of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. She follows the protagonist throughout the entire story and plays one of the central roles in many major events in the game. She started her studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1984, the same year as our Protagonist. She serves as one of the main antagonists throughout the story, but over time, she got closer to our Protagonist, and eventually, they became allies in pursuit of the Cursed Vaults.

Year One:

Chapter 2: You will first see Merula Snyde during the sorting ceremony. She stands among many other students, waiting to get sorted in one of the Houses.

However, the first time you’ll get to interact with her is just before your first Potions class. She’ll be near the classroom, bullying Rowan and forcing him/her to say she’s the most powerful witch at Hogwarts. Rowan simply couldn’t admit that since there are numerous other witches that are more powerful than her. You’ll quickly interfere and stand up for Rowan, which will only cause Merula to swap her attention to you, especially once she hears that you are Jacob’s sibling. She won’t wait long until she starts making your life miserable. She’ll sabotage your cauldron by coating it with Bulbadox Powder, thus causing it to explode. You’ll get punished for this, and Merula will be pretty satisfied with the results.

Chapter 3: Sadly, this wasn’t the end of Merula Snyde’s tyranny. In fact, it was only the beginning. Soon after, she’ll lure you into a trap by sending you a letter, posing as Professor Snape and asking you to come to the Potions Storeroom. You’ll end up trapped in a room with the Devil’s Snare and barely manage to get out of there alive, thanks to the timely intervention of Hogwarts’ gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid.

Not long after that, Merula will attack you in the Courtyard while constantly throwing taunts and provocations your way. However, unbeknownst to her, you’ll decide to train hard and learn some useful dueling spells.

Chapter 5: Later on, she’ll torment Ben Copper in the Courtyard by insulting him and calling him Mudblood in front of many other students. That’s when she crossed the line. You’ll stand up to her and defeat her in a duel, which will be a huge blow to Merula’s ego, especially given the fact that most of the students were watching the duel.

Chapter 6: Since unsupervised dueling on the school grounds is strictly against the rules, both Merula and you will have to face consequences, and both of you will be punished accordingly by Professor Snape. Later on, you’ll follow him and the caretaker to one of the Upstairs Corridors, where you’ll find out that the Cursed Vaults are actually real. This is when you’ll learn that Merula is interested in finding the Cursed Vaults, but she won’t share her reasons.

Chapter 7: While brewing Herbicide Potion during one the Potions lesson, you’ll notice that Merula is incorrectly brewing her potion. You’ll try to warn her, but she’ll simply ignore your warning, as usual. However, Professor Snape will notice this and he’ll award you ten House Points.

Chapter 9: Merula Snyde will surprise you and your friends right before you’re about to enter the Mysterious Icy Room in the Upstairs Corridor. Apparently, she was following you and waiting for the perfect opportunity to surprise attack you and enter the room first.

However, her victory will be short-lived. Once you enter the room, you’ll notice that Merula got trapped by the ice, which completely encased her up to the waist. You and your friends will eventually free her and you’ll manage to escape the room just before the ice overwhelms you.

Year Two:

Chapter 1: You’ll meet Merula Snyde just before your first Transfiguration Lesson, shortly after you find out that Ben’s been missing. She’ll warn you that there are some dangerous things happening at Hogwarts. However, Merula won’t be willing to tell you anything about Ben, so you won’t be able to rely on her for any kind of help, sadly.

Chapter 4: After getting mocked by some of her classmates that she’s not the most powerful student anymore, Merula will decide to settle things with you once and for all. She’ll challenge you to another duel, but this time, she’ll threaten to hurt your friends should you refuse to duel her. As it turns out, Merula Snyde is quite obsessed by becoming the most powerful witch at Hogwarts, that she’ll go to great lengths to prove so.

Later that evening, you’ll meet Merula in the Clocktower Courtyard. Despite trying to reason to her, she won’t be willing to let go of this, and you’ll be forced to duel her. After defeating her, she’ll be in complete disbelief, unable to comprehend how you managed to get so powerful. Sadly for you, Merula won’t give up that easily, and will say that the rivalry between the two of you will never end.

Chapter 5: You’ll meet Merula Snyde on the Training Grounds before one of your Flying Classes. She’ll tell you that she knows what happened to Jacob, but she won’t be willing to share that information with you unless you promise to tell her if you ever open a Cursed Vault. You’ll be able to choose whether or not you want to make that promise, but regardless of your choice, she won’t tell you anything until you fulfill your end of a bargain.

Year Three

Chapter 2: During your first Potions class in Year 3, you’ll meet Merula Snyde alongside two other students. As it turns out, she recruited two other Slytherins – Barnaby Lee and Ismelda Murk to her cause, and she’s planning to find all of the Cursed Vaults and claim all their treasures before anyone else.

Chapter 5: Shortly after befriending Tulip, you’ll spy on Merula and her cronies in the Clocktower Courtyard. As it appears, they didn’t have much success with their search for the Cursed Vaults.

Chapter 6: Tulip and you will team up to get rid of Barnaby and Ismelda in order to confront Merula and take her key for Jacob’s room. Thankfully, Tulip’s Ultimate Dungbomb will make a short work of Merula’s cronies.

After they leave the Clocktower Courtyard, you’ll confront Merula, but sadly, she won’t be willing to part with the key without the fight, so you’ll have to duel her for it. Thankfully, this won’t be too difficult, and after defeating Merula Snyde in a duel, she’ll give you the key for Jacob’s room. Just before you leave the Clocktower Courtyard, she will warn you not to trust Tulip.

Chapter 7: After learning Riddikulus spell, you’ll get to test it on Tulip’s Boggart. As it appears, her Boggart will take a twisted form of Merula Snyde, which will shock you, to say the least. Thankfully, the Riddikulus spell will work and the Boggart will transform into completely different version of Merula.

Chapter 8: While on your way to meet Tulip in Jacob’s room, you’ll encounter Merula in the Corridor. Once again, she’ll warn you about Tulip, but she’ll also tell you that she’s planning to do something terrible as well.

Chapter 9: Just before you enter the Restricted Section of the Library, Merula Snyde and Ismelda Murk will intercept you and the rest of your friends. She wants to enter the cursed vault and claim its treasures before you, and she won’t hesitate to duel you again to do so. Luckily, you’ll come out on top. However, it won’t end up there, but thankfully, Barnaby will defend you and buy you enough time to enter the Restricted Section and look for a Cursed Vault.

Year Four

Chapter 1: During your first Care of Magical Creatures class, Merula Snyde will approach you and Charlie Weasley, and she’ll try to provoke you by mentioning Jacob. However, you’ll have the option to let Charlie deal with her, which will result in a rather comical scene.

Chapter 3: Once you learn that Penny’s Wit-Sharpening Potion is missing, you’ll help her find it, and eventually, you’ll realize that Merula stole it from her. To make matters worse, she took credit for Penny’s work, which made your Hufflepuff friend very angry.

Later on, when you use Polyjuice Potion to make Merula confess that she stole Penny’s potion, and the Headmaster will correct things by recognizing Penny’s talent in front of all of the students.

Chapter 4: Merula Snyde will be one of the students picked by Madam Rakepick to serve as her potential curse-breaker apprentices. As it appears, she wants to train several students to face the dangers of the Cursed Vaults, and Merula Snyde is one of them.

Eventually, you’ll duel one another, and you’ll get to choose who you want to go against. Of course, one of the choices is Merula, and dueling her is likely the most interesting choice here.

Chapter 5: Once you decide to sneak into the Forbidden Forest with Charlie, you’ll realize you need a broom for that. You’ll get the option to ask Merula to borrow you her broom, and if you decide to do so, you’ll meet with her at the Three Broomsticks. Initially, she’ll think you’re crazy for asking to borrow her broom, but after explaining yourself, she’ll be willing to aid you.

Chapter 6: Merula and Tulip will help you search Jacob’s room in order to find any clues that could help you locate the Cursed Vault. Eventually, you’ll find a drawing pointing to a specific location within the Forbidden Forest.

Later on, you’ll go into the Forbidden Forest with one of your friends. You’ll get the option to ask Merula to go with you, and surprisingly enough, she’ll agree if you do. Once you arrive at the Forest Grove, you’ll encounter a centaur named Torvus. At first, he’ll be quite hostile to you, so you’ll have to defeat him in a duel before you get the chance to talk to him. Eventually, you’ll find out that Jacob took a special arrow from him, and he never returned it. Luckily, it appears to be the same arrow you found in the Vault of Fear, but it’s missing the arrowhead. In the end, you’ll offer to find it and return the arrow to him, and in exchange, he’ll take you to the Forest Vault.

Chapter 11: While gathering Fairy Wings in Care of Magical Creatures, Merula Snyde will approach you and ask for an update on your search for the Cursed Vaults. Here you’ll learn that she’s working for Madam Rakepick, and apparently, Merula is quite happy to be her apprentice curse-breaker.
