Take the O.W.L.s Part 1
Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to Part 1 of our Walkthrough for Take the O.W.L.s Adventure of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. This one is available for all the students of Year 5 once they reach Chapter 25 of the main story. Like many of the previous adventures, this one also consists of four parts, but unlike most of the others, this one has a lot more tasks.
During this adventure, your skills and knowledge will be tested and you will be graded depending on your performance. This is, perhaps the single most important adventure that will more than likely have a heavy impact on the game’s ending, so keep that in mind. It is worth mentioning that you have three days and nineteen hours to complete it and this walkthrough will give you all the pointers you need to quickly finish the adventure with the highest possible scores.

Walkthrough
Once you begin, head to the Great Hall to hear Dumbledore’s announcement. Upon arriving, you’ll be able to interact with some of your friends by tapping on their speech bubbles. Shortly after, Professor Dumbledore will start his announcement.
He’ll introduce the O.W.L.s examiner, Professor Tofty.
Professor Tofty will then remind you about the O.W.L.s and what they represent.
There are six possible scores you can earn in each of the subjects. There are three passing scores and three failing scores. The passing scores are Outstanding, Exceeds Expectations, and Acceptable. The failing scores are Poor, Dreadful, and Troll. In order to be allowed to continue on to N.E.W.T.s, you’ll need to do well on your O.W.L.s.
Shortly after, Rowan will ask if you are ready for your O.W.L.s. There are three options to respond with, and each will pretty much lead to the same outcome, so feel free to pick whichever one you want.
You’ll then get to talk to your friends about O.W.L.s. To complete this task, you need to earn five stars within three hours. One star is needed to pass.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are reward actions tied to Chiara and Ismelda. Prioritize those to save energy.
Once you are done, Dumbledore will give you a helpful piece of advice.
Next, you need to meet your Head of House in their Classroom. This part will differ a bit, depending on the House you’re in. Your Head of House will ask if you’ve picked a career you want to pursue once you finish your Hogwarts studies. This choice won’t have any significant effect, so feel free to pick the option you prefer.
You’ll then get to review your career options. To complete this task, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if you are low on energy.
Bonus progress actions are tied to the left blackboard and your character. Prioritize the bonus actions to save energy.
When you are done, your Head of House will sum up the requirements for some of the more demanding career options.
She will say that Aurors and Healers require at least five N.E.W.T.s.
As it appears, in order to even qualify for taking N.E.W.T.s, you need to have good enough scores in your O.W.L.s.
Go to the Kitchens and meet Jae there for your next task. He seems to require your assistance in setting up his inventory. He’ll mention some facts about cheating on O.W.L.s. You have three options to react to this, but none of those will have any big impact on the story.
Moments later, Penny will arrive. As it appears, she is planning to cheat in order to pass her O.W.L.s. You’ll then get to discuss this with Penny while helping Jae organize his stuff. To do this, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass. Because of that, it is not recommended to start this task if your energy bar is empty.
There are reward actions tied to Jae and his box. Focus on those if you want to save energy.
When you are done, Jae will ask if you would consider working for the Ministry’s Department of Magical Law Enforcement. There are no immediate consequences of this choice, but if this is something you’d like for your character, it is recommended to pick “Yes” for an answer.
Penny will then admit she had no time to study ever since her sister got trapped in the painting, which is why she wants to resort to cheating.
She’ll be curious to know why you don’t want her to cheat. You have three options to respond with. Each of these will lead to the same outcome, so feel free to pick the one you want.
You’ll then get to revise Potions with Penny. Head to the Artefact Room when you are ready to continue. At first, it will appear as if Penny isn’t planning on showing up.
But just as you thought she gave up, she’ll surprise you with her arrival.
You’ll then get to brew some Wideye Potion to help you with studying. For this task, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, which is why you shouldn’t start this task if your energy bar is empty.
There are bonus actions tied to your character and the cauldron. Prioritize those actions if you are looking to save some energy.
Once you are done, Penny will ask if you want to become a Potioneer. If this is a career you’d like to pursue, be sure to pick the first option.
Rowan will show up shortly after and request some of the Wideye Potion. Evidently, your friend intends to put in a lot of time studying before the OWLs begin. Rowan has overstudied, as it turns out, and Penny and you will agree that more study will only make matters worse.
You’ll suggest meeting in the Forbidden Forest to help Rowan relax, so head there when you are ready. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by Hagrid and Chiara Lobosca. You may remember her from The Halloween Feast and Lone Wolf Adventures.
She’ll call her little friend Borf, a werewolf pup who was also present during the Halloween Feast adventure.
You’ll then get to play with Borf and help Rowan relax at the same time. This requires earning five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if you are out of energy.
There are reward actions tied to Borf and your character. Focus on those to save energy.
Once you are done, Hagrid will suggest asking Rowan a test question. Keep in mind that each of these questions will show up during the test, so you can use the opportunity to learn one of the answers in advance (but don’t worry, all of the questions and the answers will be shown in this Walkthrough later on).
Shortly after, Chiara will tell you that she wants to become a Healer.
She’ll ask if you could picture yourself as a Healer. If this is a career you would like for your character, you should pick “Yes” for an answer.
There are three hours until your Potions O.W.L. starts. Since you will likely be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait and let your energy recharge in the meantime.
Head to the Potions classroom once the waiting time is over. Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of your classmates. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. After talking a bit to your classmates, the Potions O.W.L. will begin.
The first part of the test is the written exam. This is where you’ll be asked various questions about different potions. Below are all the questions and the correct answers to them.
- In which scenario would you use a Deflating Draught? – Nulling effects of Swelling Potion
- Which is a possible side effect of Pepperup Potion? – Steam Coming Out Of Ears
- How many Lionfish Spines are used in one batch of Herbicide Potion? – Four
- How long should a Polyjuice Potion stew before usage? – One month
Once you are done, the practical exam will start. First, you’ll be asked to identify an ingredient used for brewing Wideye Potions. To do that, you need to complete a focus task.
Next, you’ll need to crush some Snake Fangs. This is a relatively simple tracing task which should be quite easy.
Next, you’ll need to brew a Draught of Peace. To do that, you need to keep the icon in the green zone of the bar for 4 seconds. Simply tap and hold anywhere on the screen until the icon is close to the green zone. Then, release and slowly tap and release continuously to keep the icon inside the green zone until the task is done.
Finally, you’ll need to stir a Befuddlement Draught. Trace the path on the screen to do so. While doing this, try not to go too fast or you may risk failing this task.
If you follow these guidelines, you’ll most likely complete every single task successfully. However, there is a slight possibility to fail the tracing tasks or the focus one, but do not be disheartened if you do. In order to obtain the Outstanding score, you are allowed to fail one task.
Keep in mind that if you finish all of your O.W.L.s with the Outstanding score, you will get an additional reward upon completing the adventure! When you are done with these tasks, Penny will ask if you found the Potions O.W.L. difficult. You have two options to respond with. There are some minor dialogue differences, but overall, the outcome is pretty much the same, so pick whichever option you prefer.
Shortly after, Professor Tofty will tell you that you can seek his help should you ever need advice regarding your career options.
Not long after that, Part 1 of Take the O.W.L.s adventure will come to an end. Hit the Collect button to claim your reward. You will receive 500 Coins.
The Potions O.W.L. was just a start. You have six more to go. In the next part, you will be tested in Charms and Transfiguration. What will await you there? Will you manage to complete those O.W.L.s successfully? Find out in Part 2 of this exciting adventure!
