Walkthrough
Upon arriving, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say.
You’ll approach Hagrid and ask why he wanted to meet with you. Suddenly, you will notice a bite mark on his hand. As it seems, he’s been having a problem with a certain magical creature.
He will ask if you’ve ever heard of a Hodag. There are two options to reply with. This choice won’t affect the story in any big way, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.
Hagrid will say that the Hodag is a magical creature originating from Wisconsin. You’ll find it odd that a creature from the United States of America found its way to Hogwarts.
Hagrid will explain that he got the Hodag from a friend. Apparently, it was terrorizing the local Mooncalf herd.
You will ask Hagrid to tell you more about the problem. Learning about the Hodag problem requires earning five stars within one hour. Three stars are needed to pass.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There is a bonus progress action tied to Hagrid, so focus on his actions if you want to save a bit of energy.
You’ll learn that the Hodag in the Magical Creatures Reserve is constantly trying to bite Hagrid. The following line will differ, based on whether or not you’ve adopted the Hodag yet.
Hagrid will ask you to help him win over the creature’s trust. You’ll find it odd that he wants to befriend a hostile creature. He’ll say that he wants to use the opportunity to bond with the Hodag.
After considering it for a moment, you will agree to help Hagrid. He’ll be happy to hear that. Shortly after, the two of you will leave the courtyard.
You will need to unlock Hodag before you can continue. To do that, you will need to have your Magizoology at level 8 or higher. You will also need 50 Red, 45 Blue, and 30 Yellow Notebooks. Collecting these might take a while, but since this side quest is not time-limited, you don’t need to rush it.
Head to the Forest area of Magical Creatures Reserve once you unlock the Hodag. Hopefully, you will be able to figure out why the creature was trying to bite Hagrid.
You will wonder if the Hodag was doing that because it’s hungry. Hagrid will say that the creature didn’t want to take any food from him.
You will suggest trying to feed the Hodag to earn its trust.
Feeding the Hodag requires earning five stars within three hours. Since all five stars are needed to pass, avoid starting this task if your energy is low.
There are bonus progress actions tied to the Hodag, Hagrid, and your character. Prioritize those if you want to save some energy.
You won’t have any problem feeding the creature.
Unfortunately, Hagrid won’t be as lucky as you. The Hodag will angrily growl at him.
Moments later, it will lunge at Hagrid.
You’ll ask if he is all right. Thankfully, he won’t end up getting injured. The Hodag will start growling at Hagrid again.
You will be able to do something to prevent it from harming your friend. There are three options to choose from. The easiest way to handle the situation is to put yourself in front of the Hodag.
Hagrid will thank you for saving him. You’ll ask if there is anything special about his coat.
After thinking about it for a moment, Hagrid will recall spilling some of the Mooncalves’ food on his coat earlier. Because of that, the Mooncalves were cuddling up to him.
You will quickly realize why the Hodag tried attacking him earlier.
You will suggest that he washes his clothes before approaching the creature again. That way, he might be able to bond with the Hodag.
Proceed to Hagrid’s garden once you are ready to test your theory. Once you arrive, Hagrid will tell you that he did as you asked. Hopefully, the creature won’t try to bite him again if he doesn’t smell like Mooncalves.
Luckily enough, your theory will be correct, and the Hodag won’t be interested in eating Hagrid’s coat.
You’ll then get to introduce the creature to your friend. This requires earning five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
There are bonus progress actions tied to your character and the giant carrot. Focus on those if you want to save some energy.
Hagrid will manage to successfully feed the Hodag. He’ll be incredibly happy about it.
He will thank you for helping him.
You can choose to humbly accept his thanks or boast about helping. If you like Hagrid, it is recommended to pick the first option.
Hagrid will thank you for helping him from the bottom of his heart. From now on, he will know how to approach the creature.
Suddenly, the Hodag will sniff something and start running towards the forest.
You’ll quickly decide to follow it.
You will need to reach level 4 trust with the Hodag before you can continue. Since the side quest is not time-limited, you can take your time to complete this task.
Once you are done, proceed to the Forest Grove. You will spot the Hodag standing close to Corrine Cribb.
The following lines will differ, based on whether this is your first time encountering her or not.
She will assume that the Hodag is yours. You will learn that she used the Mooncalf Essence to lure the creature.
You will ask her why she lured the Hodag. She’ll explain that its horns are extremely valuable.
Unfortunately for her, Hodags are protected species. Because of that, as soon as she found out about the creature, she decided to jump at the opportunity to capture it.
You will decide not to let her take the Hodag. In the end, you will have no other option but to duel Corrine.
The task window will display the recommended attribute levels and the cost of the duel.
The recommended attribute levels for this duel will be similar to your own attribute levels. This will make the duel quite challenging. There are a few strategies you can use to improve your chances of winning. One tactic involves going Aggressive during the first turn and using Incendio. If you get the burn effect, you can go Aggressive or Sneaky during the second turn and use Depulso or Flipendo.
This way, you can win the duel in two turns. However, if you get stunned, or if you don’t get the burn effect, you might end up losing the duel. The other strategy you can use is to simply go Aggressive or Sneaky constantly and use Depulso or Flipendo. With some luck, you should be able to win the duel.
Corrine Crib will be impressed by your dueling skills.
You’ll say that you won’t let her take the Hodag. She will grin at you before grabbing the creature and apparating away.
Having no other options, you will decide to go to Hagrid and see if he can help you track them down. Proceed to Hagrid’s garden when you are ready. You will rush towards Hagrid to tell him what happened.
Before you get the chance to say anything, he will introduce you to Holly Blackbird, a witch from the Magical Congress of the United States of America. He’ll also say that Holly’s specialty is protecting Hodags from Muggles. She will cheerfully greet you.
Apparently, she already knows that you helped Hagrid earlier. You will learn that she needs to take the Hodag back to Wisconsin. She’ll notice that something’s upsetting you.
After greeting her, you will quickly inform her about what happened. The following lines will differ, based on whether or not you completed Relight the Fire side quest.
Holly will say that she’s well aware of who Corrine Cribb is.
You will suggest working together to save the Hodag. Holly will be unsure if working with a student is a smart thing to do. Before making up her mind, she will ask you to tell her everything you know.
Informing Holly Blackbird requires earning five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
There are bonus progress actions tied to Holly and your character. Prioritize those if you want to save some energy.
Holly will be surprised to hear about your duel with Corrine Cribb.
She’ll tell you not to worry since she is going to find the missing Hodag. Once again, you will offer to help. She’ll still be unsure if she should allow you to go with her. Hagrid will say a few words to convince her.
You’ll also say that the Hodag is your responsibility. In the end, Holly will agree to let you come with her, as long as you promise to follow her lead.
There are two options to reply with. This choice will influence some of the dialogue lines during the next task, but it won’t affect the story significantly, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.
Shortly after, the two of you will leave Hagrid’s garden. Proceed to the Forest area of Magical Creatures Reserve when you are ready. Not long after entering the forest, you will find Corrine Cribb and the Hodag.
She will be very surprised to see Holly Blackbird.
Holly will ask you to stay back and let her handle everything. She’ll approach the Dark Witch and tell her to release the Hodag.
You will notice that Corrine Cribb is preparing to attack her, so you will quickly take out your wand and cast the Disarming Charm. Trace the wand movement to cast Expelliarmus.
Holly’s reaction will differ, based on your previous choice.
You will quickly rush towards the Hodag.
You’ll decide to calm the creature down before taking it away from Corrine Cribb. Calming the Hodag requires earning five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.
There are actions with bonus progress tied to Holly, your character, and the Hodag. Focus on those if you want to save as much energy as possible.
In the end, Holly will end up defeating the Dark Witch. She will praise you for doing a good job calming the Hodag.
You’ll ask if she is still planning on taking the creature back to Wisconsin. She’ll nod and say that she wants to take the Hodag back to where it belongs. She will ask if you were hoping that the creature would stay at Hogwarts. You’ll tell her that you really care about the Hodag.
Still, Holly won’t be sure if she can agree to your request. You’ll tell her that the Hodag is still not really to travel. Holly will agree with you.
You’ll ask her to let you spend some time with the creature.
After taking a moment to consider your request, she will agree to it. Head back to the Forest area of Magical Creatures Reserve when you are ready to continue.
You will take the Hodag away from where Corrine Cribb and Madam Blackbird dueled in the hope that it will feel better. The creature will give you a curious look.
You’ll say there is nothing to worry about since both you and Madam Blackbird will do your best to keep the Hodag safe. Unfortunately, the creature will still look scared.
You’ll wonder if there’s anything you can do about it. You’ll then get to decide how to approach the situation. There are three options to choose from. None of these options will impact the story significantly, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.
However, if you choose to try cuddling the Hodag, you’ll be rewarded with a heartwarming scene.
The creature will seem much happier than before.
You’ll then get to spend some more time with the Hodag. Bonding with the Hodag requires earning five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
There is a fair number of bonus progress actions available here, which should allow you to save some energy.
The creature will seem to enjoy spending time with you.
Perhaps there is a way for you to convince Madam Blackbird to allow the Hodag to stay at Hogwarts… You’ll decide to show her how much you’ve bonded with the creature.
You will need to reach a maximum Trust level with the Hodag before you can continue.
This might take a while, but since this side quest is not time-limited, you don’t need to rush this task. Simply feed and bond with the creature, and eventually, you will complete this task.
Proceed to Hagrid’s garden once you’re done. As it seems, Madam Blackbird told Hagrid about what happened earlier. She’ll praise you for being so brave.
You’ll thank her for the kind words and ask if she’ll let the Hodag stay at Hogwarts. She won’t be sure if doing that would be the best course of action.
Perhaps she will change her mind if you show her how much you’ve bonded with the creature… Demonstrating your bond requires earning five stars within three hours. Since all five stars are needed to pass, avoid starting this task if your energy bar is empty.
There are bonus progress actions tied to Madam Blackbird and your character. Prioritize those if you want to save some energy.
Madam Blackbird will see how much the creature is attached to you.
After taking a moment to think about it, she will decide to let the Hodag stay at Hogwarts. You’ll be surprised to hear that. She’ll smile and explain why she made that decision.
You will be incredibly happy about it.
Your cuddly friend will look forward to spending more time with you.
This will mark the end of A Whole Lotta Hodag, Ya Know side quest. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 500 Experience Points and 200 Friendship Experience for Hagrid.
What an eventful quest! You got to befriend another magical creature and save it from Corrine Cribb. And the strength of your bond convinced Madam Blackbird to allow the Hodag to stay at Hogwarts, so you will be able to visit this cuddly creature whenever you want.
