Chapter 9 – Dangerous Friends
Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Chapter Nine of Year Five of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. Last time, you asked Jae if he could provide you with some information about Mundungus Fletcher.
Afterward, you attended the Defence Against the Dark Arts class during which you faced a Boggart and demonstrated to the entire class how to deal with one.
Once the class was over, Madam Rakepick decided to put you through a series of tests in order to have you prepared for the trip to Knockturn Alley. Thankfully, you passed all her tests and are almost ready for another adventure.

Walkthrough
So, let’s start things off in a usual manner, by doing the lessons part of the chapter first. When you are ready, proceed to the Potions classroom.
Unlocking the Deflating Draught lesson requires you to obtain nine stars from the Potions classes. Choose a class duration suitable to your liking and hit the Start button to begin.
Prioritize the bonus progress actions to save as much energy as possible.
Each star you obtain will give you a mini-task. Do it successfully to earn ten Knowledge points.
Repeat this until you have all the stars needed to unlock the lesson. Once you do, head back to the Potion classroom.
Learning to brew the Deflating Draught is a three-hour task with a passing requirement of five stars. Because of this, you want to avoid starting it with an empty energy bar.
As for the lesson, do it similarly to the previous classes and you shouldn’t encounter any problems. Also, one of the mini-tasks involves answering Professor Snape’s question.
Once you get all five stars, wave your wand over the cauldron to finish the potion.
Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You’ll also be able to claim an additional reward in the Potions section of your Hogwarts Record.
Once you’re done, proceed to the Herbology classroom for the second lesson of the chapter.
In order to unlock the Fanged Geranium lesson, you’ll need to obtain a total of nine stars from the Herbology classes. As always, choose the class duration that suits your playstyle and hit the Start button to begin.
In these classes, there should be a fair number of bonus progress actions, which will make things easier.
And it goes without saying – complete as many of the mini-tasks as possible to gain some extra Empathy points.
When you obtain enough stars to unlock the lesson, head back to the classroom to attend it.
To pass the Fanged Geranium lesson, you need to earn five stars within three hours.
Follow the same steps you did in the classes you took previously and you’ll be done quickly and easily.
During the lesson, Professor Sprout will ask you a question about Fanged Geraniums.
Once you earn the fifth star, you’ll be tasked with fertilizing your plant. Trace the path on the screen to do so.
Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards.
You’ll earn an additional reward for completing the lesson. You can claim it in the Herbology section of your Hogwarts Record.
Now that you’ve completed the lessons, you can resume the story. Hit the GO button and proceed to Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom to meet Madam Rakepick.
Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of your classmates. Tap on those if you are interested to see what they have to say.
Madam Rakepick will congratulate you on preparing well for your trip to Knockturn Alley.
However, before you can discuss the Floo Powder with her, you have to attend the class.
This is an hour-long task that requires you to earn at least one out of five stars to pass.
There is a bonus progress action tied to Ben. Prioritizing it should save you a bit of energy.
When you are done, Madam Rakepick will suggest you bring someone along with you to Knockturn Alley. You can choose between Jae, Merula, and Bill.
It is worth noting that Jae is locked behind level three friendship, and for Bill, you need friendship level eight. Unlike them, you won’t have any requirements to take Merula along.
Choose the one you deem the most appropriate for this adventure and bear in mind that it will influence some aspect of the story. Also, if you select Jae or Bill, you’ll be able to earn some friendship experience with them.
Once you’ve made up your mind, hit the GO button and proceed to the Three Broomsticks to meet the person you chose.
Upon entering Madam Rosmerta’s establishment, you’ll be able to interact with her and a couple of other characters before proceeding to meet your friend.
No matter who you chose, you’ll have to do some convincing before that person agrees to join you on your adventure.
The task window will display the recommended attribute levels as well as the cost.
This behaves pretty similarly to the Drink Butterbeer mini-game. You’ll simply have to pick the options that will reassure your friend and explain that everything will be fine.
At this point, your attribute levels should be sufficiently high to complete this task without too much trouble. Below are some of the questions and answers for recruiting your friends.
Jae Kim:
- Why do you want me to go? – You know Knockturn Alley. (Empathy)
- What if we get caught? – We won’t get caught. (Courage)
- What if Fletcher tricks us? – I’ll outsmart him. (Knowledge)
- I have other enemies there… – We’ll avoid them. (Knowledge)
- Knockturn Alley is dangerous… – That’s why I need you with me. (Courage)
- I’m just not sure about this… – We can do this, Jae. (Empathy)
Merula Snyde:
- Why do you want me to go? – You won’t be intimidated (Empathy)
- What if we get caught? – We won’t get caught (Courage)
- What if Fletcher tricks us? – I’ll outsmart him. (Knowledge)
- You’ll be a liability… – You can abandon me. (Knowledge)
- Knockturn Alley is dangerous… – That’s why I need you with me (Courage)
- I’m just not sure about this… – We can do this, Merula. (Empathy)
Bill Weasley:
- Why do you want me to go? – You’re the most experienced (Empathy)
- What if we get caught? – We won’t get caught. (Courage)
- What if Fletcher tricks us? – I’ll outsmart him. (Knowledge)
- What about my N.E.W.T.s? – This won’t take long. (Knowledge)
- Knockturn Alley is dangerous… – That’s why I need you with me. (Courage)
- I’m just not sure about this… – We can do this, Bill. (Empathy)
Once you are done, hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. If you chose Bill or Jae earlier, you will earn some friendship experience with them.
Thankfully, you’ll be able to convince the person you chose to accompany you to Knockturn Alley.
For the next task, you should head to the Training Grounds to meet your friends.
Apparently, Bill is planning to teach Jae, Merula, and you a new spell that could come in handy on your curse-breaking adventures.
The spell he’ll be teaching you is the Stunning Spell, Stupefy. It will definitely be useful in some sticky situations.
To learn it, you need to acquire at least one out of five stars within three hours.
There is a bonus progress action tied to Merula. Focus on it to save a bit of energy.
When you are done, you’ll be tasked with casting the Stunning Spell on Bill. Trace the wand movement on the screen to do so.
What follows is a pretty funny scene involving Bill getting knocked off his feet, literally. At least Merula will have a blast laughing at him.
From now on, you will be able to use Stupefy Spell while dueling. It is usable in the Aggressive stance. It deals 3 points of base damage and has a chance to stun the opponent for up to two turns.
Your final task of the chapter involves learning how to use Floo Powder. When you are ready, proceed to the Great Hall to meet Professor Rakepick.
Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some characters. Tap on those if you are curious to find out what they have to say.
And finally, after a long wait, Madam Rakepick will decide to teach you how to use Floo Powder.
Learning to use Floo Powder is a task that requires you to earn five stars within eight hours. Only one star is needed to pass.
There is a bonus progress action tied to your character. Prioritize it to save energy.
Once you’re done, you’ll learn that the fireplace within Hogwarts that is surely connected to the Floo Network is inside the Headmaster’s Office. Madam Rakepick will ask you to meet her there.
This will also mark the end of Chapter 9 of Year 5. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 250 Coins and 2000 Experience points.
Finally, after all the preparation, you are ready to head to Knockturn Alley. But will you be able to get there safely? And will you find Mundungus Fletcher? More importantly, will he be willing to cooperate and reveal the Cursed Vault location to you? Find out in the next chapter of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery!
Thank you for reading. Until next time.
