HyperParasite Review

Released during the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, the game titled Hyperparasite does sound like just the thing. However, it is not about any viruses originating on Earth, but about a parasite from outer space. However, the brilliant twist in this game is that we, the players, assume the role of that extraterrestrial parasite and we get to abuse human hosts, change them, and cause problems on Earth, with the end goal being… Well, we’re not going to spoil it for you.

hyperparasite

Right off the bat, the obvious focus in HyperParasite is the game’s atmosphere, which is generated mainly by its setting and appearance. The narrative is shaped to look like something out of a ‘90s sci-fi/horror movie, like They Live or The Thing, but with no dull horror elements. Instead, the synthwave music and the old school graphics style do set the stage for what is attempted, and it works!

hyperparasite

HyperParasite can be compared to Crimson Land, the pioneering title in the twin-stick shooter/action genre, or Tesla vs. Lovecraft. It is a twin-stick, top-down, rogue-like, shooter-brawler, action game that brings the hectic action and overwhelming adrenaline, which is the signature thing in the genre, but with its contribution. The game is never the same when played again and it is as addictive as it is fun.

As mentioned, the player assumes the role of an alien parasite who snatches the bodies of humans to fulfill its agenda. There are currently 60 different characters to snatch bodies as we climb up the human hierarchy chain to even possess the president. Of course, the parasite is constantly being hunted and the action never stops.

hyperparasite

As mentioned, HyperParasite features a somewhat classical old school gaming visual style of the early ’00 or the late ‘90s. However, it is not a pixel-art game. It just uses the old computer graphics look to achieve its atmospheric goal, which is also enhanced with synthwave music and even the dress style of the characters in-game. Otherwise, the models are detailed, the animations and mechanics are smooth and fast, which is crucial for this genre, and the game itself looks good. The cinematic videos are also along the lines of the ‘90s alien animated films.

Verdict

hyperparasite

HyperParasite is a must-try for all who love Crimsonland and similar twin-stick shooters. The action is perhaps better than ever before in the genre, while the game adds and expands the rules of these games and creates new frontiers. Also unlike the famous titles from the genre is its immersive story. And, the whole premise of playing as a body-snatching alien parasite sounds too cool to just pass on.
