Death Stranding

Is Death Stranding Development Nearing Its End?

You may remember Death Stranding game as something that looked unbelievable and very confusing. The game has an impressive cast like Daryl from the Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen famous for the titular role in Hannibal TV show, among other things, and Guillermo del Toro, a director, producer, screenwriter, and avid gamer. The game is created by Hideo Kojima a critically acclaimed game designer who seems to be playing Death Stranding every day on PlayStation 4 the latest report said.

Based on Kojima, the game is now in the critical phase of development although Death Stranding still seems to be in parts that need to be connected in one whole.

“Death Stranding is not in its debugging stage, but combing all the game elements formed in the development tools into the game,” said Kojima in a tweet on March 24 which was then translated by Aki Saito, Kojima Productions’ Head of Marketing and Communications. “So every day, Hideo’s playing the game on PS4, connecting, adjusting. It’s adding and taking out things at the same time. A key time in the development!”

Many found interesting that Kojima is playing Death Stranding on PlayStation 4 since this console is expected to be replaced by a new one. This may mean that Death Stranding will be the last game for the iconic console, or simply that this is the only available and good enough hardware for Kojima to try out his game. It’s unclear just like a lot of things regarding Death Stranding. Even the synopsis from the official website doesn’t say anything remotely meaningful that would help the audience understand what is the game about:

“Sam Bridges must brave a world utterly transformed by the Death Stranding. Carrying the stranded remnants of the future in his hands, Sam embarks on a journey to reunite the shattered world one step at a time. What is the mystery of the Death Stranding? What will Sam discover on the road ahead? A genre-defining gameplay experience holds these answers and more.”

Unfortunately, Sony’s State of Play didn’t say anything about the game nor include it in its announcements, much to the disappointment of the gaming community which was expecting more news on this project. For now, the release date is yet to be announced as well as more details on the story and the devastated world depicted in trailers.

Death Stranding was announced at E3 2016 and since then it’s been in development and offering crumbs to the audience. Title of the game is referencing the cetacean stranding or beaching which is a phenomenon when dauphins and whales strand themselves on the land and die. This is an action game set in the open world which will include a multiplayer mode. Many aspects shown in the trailers have created a lot of interest among the audience like Timefall, a rain that ages living beings or deteriorates things. In several interviews, Kojima stated that this is a game about the connection between life and death, which is also apparent from the trailers especially when it comes to Mads Mikkelsen’s character who seems to be the villain.

The main character Sam Porter Bridges played by Norman Reedus seems to be able to walk in the land of the living and the dead. Basically, it appears that when you die in the game you continue to play in the sort of purgatory-like universe. Sam seems to be special since he can assume some form of astral projection and wander outside his body when he can also recover items as well.

“At that point, you’re not dead or alive. It’s the equivalent of that screen that says ‘Continue?’ and a counter ticking down towards zero,” said Kojima for IGN back in December 2017. “Death will never pull you out of the game.”

So, there is still a lot we don’t know about the game and unfortunately, that includes all the crucial elements like the plot and characters. Hopefully, we will have some news about Death Stranding since it looks amazing and interesting to play. Who knows, maybe this will be the title that will announce the next-gen consoles from Sony.
