Here is the second part of PC games retrospective of 2018. As we mentioned before, we tried to make the best list and naturally, there will be games that we excluded from the list and we apologize in advance.
Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 is a pretty amazing racing game with an open world are really cool wheels. Developed by Playground Games, the game was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One, which is logical considering it was published by Microsoft Studios. The game is also available for offline playing, while when it comes to awards it won the Best Sports/Racing Game at The Game Awards 2018, the Best Racing Game at both Gamescom and Game Critics Awards, and receive numerous nominations.
The moment it was released, Frostpunk by 11-bit studios was sold in 250,000 copies in just three days. This city-building survival game is available only for Microsoft Windows and received favorable reviews, like 8.3 from us. The game takes place in an alternate 19th century where the volcanic winter took over the world. The generators are designed to serve as the core of the cities where people will find shelter and build a community. Players take the role of the city leaders and have to build their settlement and prevent it from dying.
Ghost of a Tale
The final version of Ghost of a Tale was released in spring, although it had its early version in 2016 and had an Indiegogo campaign raised over $40,000 back in 2013. The game is an action RPG developed for the most part by Lionel Gallat whose previous experience includes DreamWorks and Universal Pictures. The game takes place in a world of anthropomorphic animals after the War of the Green Flame when rats rose as heroes against a threatening entity and expelled the mice out for their treachery. Players control a small mouse named Tilo who needs to escape the dungeons and numerous dangers in order to uncover the truth about the past.
Gris is an artistic adventure-platformer developed by indie Nomada Studio. This is a truly remarkable journey of a girl named Gris whose emotional troubles we see as a grey world she is on a mission to color. For those who want to experience something novel in the gaming industry, Gris is a perfect game to show a different side of game design and how emotionally-driven games can actually be. Add to that some wonderful art and music, and this title will be a unique adventure.
Into the Breach
Winner of the Best Strategy Game at the 2018 Game Awards, Into the Breach is praised for its strategic gameplay and art style. The game involves giant robots fighting giant monsters something we’ve seen before in numerous manga and anime, as well as Pacific Rim franchise. Game’s music score composed by Ben Prunty has received positive reactions, and since the team behind the game is responsible for FTL: Faster Than Light hit game, you can be sure that Into the Breach will be fun, too.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Kingdom Come: Deliverance takes place in the Kingdom of Bohemia, medieval Holy Roman Empire when Henry a son of the killed blacksmith is on the path of vengeance. This action role-playing video game respects the facts and if you are interested in history, you will certainly find this medieval tale a valuable gaming experience.
Minit is an indie adventure game released across several other platforms besides PC version. The game has a unique premise involving one-minute gameplay which symbolizes a life of each player. In these sixty seconds, players will be able to get to know the world a little bit each time through a small adventure. The innovative gameplay of Minit was recognized at the 2018 Golden Joystick Awards where it was nominated for the Best Indie Game.
Monster Hunter: World
While you wait for Resident Evil 2 remake to come out in January, check out another game developed by Capcom, an action RPG Monster Hunter: World. The players assume a role of a hunter who is on a mission to hunt monsters. There is also a co-op game with up to four players besides the solo play. Monster Hunter: World won the Best Co-operative Game at 2018 Golden Joystick Awards and the Best RPG Game at the Game Awards 2018. Not to mention that it sold in over five million copies really fast after the release making it the most popular in the franchise.
NBA 2K19 is the 20th title in the franchise featuring the most famous names of the US basketball. The game features LeBron James on the 20th Anniversary Edition, while Giannis Antetokuonmpo is on the Standard Edition. The game was praised by all, although its microtransactions were under some heavy criticism. At the 2018 Game Awards, the game was nominated in the Best Sports/Racing Game category and there are probably other nominations waiting for NBA 2K19 in the future.
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Another Bandai Namco Entertainment’s title, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is an action RPG and sequel to the successful Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The game is about a young king who is in search of a new kingdom after he was banished from his. During battles, characters use magic and players can control more than just the protagonist. The game was nominated in numerous categories at this year’s Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards.
Return of the Obra Dinn
Developed and published by Lucas Pope’s studio 3909 LLC, Return of the Obra Dinn won the Best Art Direction at the 2018 Game Awards and was nominated for the Best Independent Game as well. This puzzle video game is set on a ghost ship and it is up to players to discover how the crew and passengers died. With a device called the Momento Mortem, players can return to the moment a crew member died which helps resolve the mystery a lot.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
We at the BlueMoonGame gave new Lara Croft game Shadow of the Tomb Raider a 9, and we are not the only ones who believe this is a great game. This is the 12th main game in the series and takes place after the Rise of the Tomb Raider. This time Lara is on her way to stop the Mayan apocalypse she is responsible for while fighting Trinity organization and traveling through South America. The game received nominations at Game Critics Awards, Gamescom, Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards.
Soulcalibur VI is a fighting game which involves two players fighting each other in the 3D environment. This title is actually a reboot of the series and is revisiting the first installment in the franchise which took place in the 16th century. The game was nominated in the Best Fighting Game category at both Game Critics Awards and The Game Awards.
The winner of the PC Game of the Year award at the Golden Joystick Awards, Subnautica is definitely a title to pay special attention to. The game had early access release in 2014, but it was at the beginning of this year that it finally got its full PC release. This open-world survival adventure game takes place in the 22nd century during the colonization of other planets. When space vessel Aurora crash lands on the mysterious Planet 4546B, it is up to players to investigate the circumstances that led to the accident and even save the planet from a deadly disease.
This year’s the Best Debut Indie Game at the Game Awards belongs to the action-platformer The Messenger developed by Sabotage Studio. The game follows The Messenger who is one of the ninjas from the village destroyed by the Demon King. The Messenger is on a task to deliver the scroll to the top of the mountain while surviving various obstacles on the way. The game involves time travel, magic and a number of interesting characters players will meet during their journey.
Two Point Hospital
If you ever wanted to see what it feels like to manage a hospital, then Two Point Hospital may be your game. Developed by Two Point Studios, this title is a business simulation where players assume the role of a hospital administrator who is tasked to keep the hospital running in order to treat patients. In order to soften the semblance to the real-life hospitals, developers decided to use humor which worked out pretty well for the game and it received positive reviews.
Valkyria Chronicles 4
A tactical RPG, Valkyria Chronicles 4 was released for PC six months after it was released for PlayStation 4 in Japan. This is the fourth installment of the franchise, although it seems more like the sequel to 2008 original since it is set at the same time and place. The story follows commander Claude Wallace, his team Squad E and dog who are fighting against Valkyria in the Second European War. The game was developed and published by Sega and it received a nomination in the Best Strategy Game category at the 2018 Game Awards.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2
After three years, Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide finally received a sequel in the form of FPS action game Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The game takes place in the Warhammer Fantasy Universe fans are already familiar with during the End Times – an apocalyptic event. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 features Heroes of Ubersreik from the first installment who are fighting against Clan Fester and the Rotbloods. The game sold over million copies during first months of its release and received favorable reviews from critics and players around the world.
