SEGA Mega Drive Classics – SEGA games on Nintendo Switch

SEGA is known for not being reluctant about porting their legendary games to contemporary gaming systems, for the lack of their own. The project is undertaken under the banner of “Sega Ages”, and it started in the 1990s, by releasing Sega MD classic games on the Sega Saturn. The first bundles contained classic arcade games like Space Harrier, Afterburner, and OutRun. Another series known as Sega Ages 2500 were released for the PlayStation 2 in Japan, including a complete collection of the Phantasy Star series.

Golden Axe

This newest Sega Ages series for the Nintendo Switch, the first since 2012’s Sega Ages Online, has over 50 games, although not all of them have been announced yet. The 50-plus game bundle will include fan favorites such as the Golden Axe, Phantasy Star, Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage series as well as cult classics like Kid Chameleon and ToeJam & Earl.

This is the first time that most of these Genesis title will be playable on Nintendo’s hybrid console. Many titles will include their original local co-op modes, which will be enhanced by the novel Joy-Con controllers that ship with the Switch. Sega said that the collection will include many modern upgrades, including online multiplayer, achievements, mirror mode, rewind and save functionality. The games were developed by M2, the developer of the Sega 3D Classics releases on the 3DS among many other retro remakes.

Sonic The Hedgehog

A similar collection for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was announced in March of this year. Both went on sale in May. The PC version, available through Steam, includes even more titles and has been available since 2010.

Sega seems to be in a throwback happy mood right now. Not that we complain, considering that some of their games weren’t available to play anywhere else (at least legally). Not only the old school games are being ported, but the new ones too, like Valkyria Chronicles.

We hope to see even more classic games being revived for more than consoles. Our long lasting wish is to see a modern port of Skies of Arcadia, and concerning how Sega is releasing their classics, it’s highly likely it will happen anytime soon.
