Skullgirls 2nd Encore switch version has arrived for all you die-hard fans of 2D fighting (who isn’t?!), with all the sassy girls and their out-of-this-world moves. The game was eagerly awaited and the port has finally happened, so this fast-paced action is now available on the go. This Nintendo Switch version features all of the 14 original characters, the gameplay, and the game’s personality all nicely adapted and transferred for you to enjoy on your handheld portable device.
Skullgirls is, as mentioned, a 2D fighting game classic, which is right up there with Guilty Gear, Street Fighter 3, and all of the similar Anime style 2D fast-paced crazy fighters. However, as opposed to many of the games of the genre, it was released relatively more recently, in 2012. It was launched through Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network and it was available on many of the platforms that were featured for the service. The PC version was out in 2013 and the game also had its arcade version, which is gospel of course. The game did pretty well and had generally positive reviews all around, scoring around 7 or 8 out of 10 on most relevant publications, which is considered excellent given its genre, gameplay type, and old school classic style.
Part of the game’s success definitely goes to the choice of putting these cool women warriors into a fictional setting, that’s similar to the ‘40s post-war America. The world where it all happens is set in a sort of a fictional history, where everything is corrupted and war-torn. In the midst of all this chaos lies the legend of the Skull Heart, which is said to grant a wish to a woman of pure heart. However, if the wish maker is impure, she is then corrupted and transformed into a Skullgirl monster, which is where the game gets its title from.
The story is set in a time after a Grand War, and Marie, who is the newest Skullgirl, is terrorizing the Canopy Kingdom. Several other women fighters join forces to fight against Marie and to ultimately make their wish upon the Skull heart. However, none of the previous owners of the item, who attempted at the wish, were ever deemed worthy and all ended up as Marie, who is now the possessor of the Heart.
Skullgirls 2nd Encore is not the game’s sequel but the original game, which was re-released in 2014 and named Skullgirls Encore, then it got another release in 2015 for PS4 and PS Vita and got the ‘2nd’ in the title. It’s still the original game which is widely received very well and it’s now ported to Nintendo Switch, utilizing all of the platform’s advantages to make the magic happen.
