In early 2018, we had an opportunity to see DotEmu’s sequel Streets of Rage 4 and it looks amazing. The game is developed by Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games and is planned for release in 2019. There is still no news about the platforms it will be available for, but this is the first Street of Rage game in 25 years so that is cause for a lot of excitement.
Just like previous installments from the ‘90s, this is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up where players have to fight off waves of opponents using special moves. The game will take place ten years after Streets of Rage 3 and will feature returning characters like Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding, with others yet to be announced. The art style is improved and looking trendy with hand-drawn animation which is obvious on the screenshots that were released by DotEmu.
Streets of Rage franchise has been very popular in the 1990s and then it was completely developed and released by Sega. It was praised for the gameplay, but also the music score composed by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima received positive reviews. While there have been a lot of unofficial projects and remakes, the plans to develop official sequels simply didn’t come to fruition over the years until 2018. And based on the creators, Streets of Rage 4 will be an original story with improved gameplay mechanisms.
Currently, Sega and Hakuhodo DY Group under Stories International are working on developing a feature film and TV series. Hopefully, Streets of Rage 4 will be out before the movie, but there is still no news on the date for any of these projects. Fans hope that the game will be available on multiple platforms and even for mobile devices, but this is also something kept under wraps. Nonetheless, the mere news that we will have a sequel 25 years later, and the fantastic screenshots we had a chance to see, prove that Streets of Rage 4 will be one of the most anticipated titles in 2019. Let’s hope that it will be as entertaining as the trailer promises it to be.
