Epic Games apparently had an epic 2018, at least considering the financial aspect. Their biggest hit, Fortnite, help them earn 2.4 billion dollars in revenue last year, which puts them at the lead on the list of biggest earning free to play games. Fortnite made a considerable impact in a free-to-play market by introducing Fortnite battle passes. That’s the name for time-limited game purchases that let players earned digital items by completing challenges. These features were bought regularly by 34% of Fortnite players. The second best running free-to-play game is Nexon’s Dungeon Fighter Online with 1.5 billion dollars, while League of Legends is on the third place with 1.4 billion.
Concerning the premium PC and consoles, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds a.k.a. PUBG rightfully dominated the market with 1.03 billion dollars in revenue. That is still quite less than the revenue Fortnite (and nine of top ten free-to-play games) made in 2018. Following PUBG is FIFA 18 with 790 million dollars of profit, while GTA V is on the 3rd place with 628 million dollars, mostly thanks to the GTA Online.
Along with the development of the video game industry, the game streaming market also recorded increased profits. This year Twitch managed to become the highest earning video game streaming platform, earning 1.6 billion dollars and surpassing YouTube by some 33%, regardless of having much smaller audience than YouTube. Game streamers also had it big this year, led by Tyler Blevins, also known as Ninja, who raked in nearly 10 million dollars last year streaming Fortnite on video streaming services. He currently has more than 20 million subscribers on YouTube, and over 12.5 million on Twitch.
The current predictions of the gaming market are that video games will go multiplatform in a way bigger scale, thanks for the success of Fortnite. Additionally, the introduction of 5G mobile networks will affect developers to offer more cloud gaming services. It looks like the gaming will undergo some massive changes in the future.
