The latest buzz in the gaming world includes the Overwatch Director’s announcement, who said that Nintendo can take any character they want and include it in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. “You can have any single one of them” were the exact words Mr. Jeff Kaplan, the lead director of Overwatch and also the vice president of Blizzard Entertainment, used. His attitude is quite open about the collaboration with Nintendo and he has made this clear in a recent interview.
Mr. Kaplan referred to all their Overwatch characters as their “babies” but clearly said that Smash Bros. Ultimate can have any single one of them. The game currently has 31 characters to chose from. However, when asked about his favorite one and who’d he pick, Mr. Kaplan said:
“Tracer’s our girl, Tracer’s our mascot. She’d be my first choice. There’s a lot of great runners up. I think a lot of people can immediately see Doomfist gameplay applying to Smash, but if it were up to me, I’d like to see Tracer”
Tracer was also the favored choice by Mr. Wes Yanagi, who is the principal game producer on Overwatch Switch version. He agreed that Tracer is kind of a mascot for the game, but he also said he would be interested in seeing Winston leaping to Smash.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate only has one more character left unknown for the fighter pass, down from the original 5 which were announced. However, Nintendo has assured us that more characters are coming. Thus, they are reportedly exploring crossover options with other Nintendo Switch popular games, and Overwatch seems to be precisely what the doctor ordered. It has numerous colorful characters, many of them badass fighters, and also they offer interesting opportunities for porting their abilities and mechanics to Smash. We guess we shall see how this plays out….
