Zombieland Double Tapper - Review

Zombieland: Double Tapper Review

Zombieland: Double Tapper mobile is a clicker game, if the title was not clear on that enough. Furthermore, even though it grapples the topic of a zombie apocalypse, like so many other games on all platforms throughout the industry, it does so in its own unique way. This game has a snappy gameplay style paired with a somewhat humorous appearance. You will see some really funny zombies, in really flashy outfits. But, more importantly, the game uses some snappy mechanics and it is based on the Zombieland: Double Tap movie, which is currently in theatres worldwide.

Development and reception

This game has some major players involved, like Sony Pictures Television, which is offering the game on mobile game stores, and Tilting Point and Columbia Pictures in distribution. The game was developed by Metagame Studio, which also made similar tapper games in the past, like the acclaimed title Tap Busters. On Google Play, Zombieland: Double Tapper Android got 4.3 stars so far, out of over 3,5 thousand votes. However, on the iTunes App Store, it has a lesser 3.7-star rating and is #39 in adventure, with a similar number of votes.

The setting

The story setting of this game is the same as with most other zombie games, and with the movie actually. There has been a zombie apocalypse, which has swarmed the world, and what few survivors are left have banded together to fight them off. However, in the movie and in the game, you will encounter evolved zombies and even the fellow survivors who work against their own kind. The movie stars the legendary Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, which are the main characters and their likeness is also used for the game’s posters.

Gameplay

The basis of the game is as anyone might expect. Hordes of zombies are closing in on your heroes, who you prepare for the conflict. They will kill off the endless waves of zombies with anything from guns and rocket launchers, to plumbing pipes and banjoes. Yes, you read that right, the banjo instrument can be a deadly tool. This all blends into the humoristic side of the game nicely, as various everyday types of people infected with the zombie virus come at you. So, you will encounter jocks, salesmen, models, street junkies, even a homeless man with the sign ‘The end is here’ and all kinds of people all turned into zombies, out to get you.

You will go through a map of the United States of America, purging cities and states of zombies, with each stage containing its own challenges and yielding various rewards. The players get weapons, various items, and other resources you spend in making your team stronger. Once combat starts, you tap the screen where you want your team to shoot, or use abilities accordingly. That’s the core experience.

Verdict

Zombieland Double Tapper is a game designed to fulfill the people’s need to click away and have fun killing some zombies, but it lacks any wider sense of playing it. Thus, the reward of investing time in this game is low, but it is a time killer no doubt. The game seems like a publicity stunt to help promote the movie, which is also currently showing in theatres around the world, and maybe as a cash grab, not offering much else in the long term.
