While Friday the 13th: The Game won’t be having any new DLC coming its way, it will, however, go to Nintendo Switch this Spring. This survival horror game based on the cult movie franchise from the 1980s was released in 2017 by Gun Media for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as a multiplayer where you either play one of the campers or the iconic boogie man Jason Voorhees.
Friday the 13th, along with Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street defined the slasher horror genre of the ‘80s. There was a rather unsuccessful movie reboot back in 2009 and late last year there was a news that a new installment is on the way with LeBron James’s SpringHill Entertainment behind it along with Vertigo Entertainment. However, the legal dispute that prevented new DLC to come to the video game, has also raised certain questions about who owns the character of Jason Voorhees as we know him with a machete and hockey mask.
“We can’t add any content, whatsoever. Nada. Not even a new tree or rock,” said Creative Director Wes Keltner. “We can only focus on console-dedicated servers, bug fixes, and maintenance. I know this isn’t the news you wanted to hear and I wish the situation were different. But it’s the painful truth.”
Namely, the legal dispute was between the screenwriter of the original movie Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham, who was director and producer of the then feature. Since rights to the original screenplay are now back to Miller, many have been wondering what will happen not only to the movie franchise but to everything else including video games. Additionally, this raised a concern about who owns the character of Jason Voorhees since he only appears in the first movie at the very end and even then he is not resembling the great boogie man who has been a popular character in the horror genre for over three decades.
The game, now appropriately renamed for Switch as Friday the 13th: The Game Ultimate Slasher Switch Edition will include all the content that was released which means that all the packs, like Counselor Clothing Pack and Jason Kill Pack, will be available to players. However, it will not include Savini Jason character or any other Kickstarter exclusive packs.
“We’re happy to be bringing ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’ to the Nintendo Switch with the help of our partners at Black Tower and Nighthawk,” said Daniel Nixon, Gun Media’s Director of Communications. “The Nintendo Switch offers a unique experience, in both social settings and on the go, that we feel work very well with ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’.”
As it seems, Camp Crystal Lake will be opened for business once again this spring, and so will Jason Voorhees. So, get ready to play cat and mouse with one of the scariest horror characters out there and, at the same time, let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the legal dispute will be finalized soon so this movie franchise can continue.
