Board games are an excellent way to spend an evening with friends, although they do have the limitation of requiring you to be in the same room and have the appropriate number of chairs around your table of appropriate size. Well, a number of board games are making the transition to digital as well, so you can play online or against AI opponents. Isle of Skye is yet another one of them, and you can buy it on Steam for €9,99.
It is a tile-laying strategic board game released in cardboard in 2015 by Andreas Pelikan and Alexander Pfister. Isle of Skye was incredibly well received and nominated for a bunch of awards, winning the Best Boardgame at the UK Games Expo of 2016. Another award it snagged was perhaps the most highly esteemed board gaming award, the prestigious 2016 Kennerspiel des Jahres, the German “game of the year for gaming connoisseurs”.
The gameplay of Isle of Skye revolves around chieftains (the players) who compete in building a kingdom on the highland island of the same name. Placing tiles strategically to obtain various win conditions is how you get ahead of the competition, and how you shape your island plays another role as you get more points if you succeed in building it in blocks, big rows or columns. The economy of the game is another interesting factor, as the players themselves decide on the prices of the tiles, which means every new game with different players can be a completely different experience. Add to this the variety of objectives you can implement each game (4 out of 16), and you have an experience that is continually changing. At the end of each game, points are scored for buildings, ships, whiskey, sheep and hairy coos, as well as objectives completed.
The digital version of Isle of Skye was developed by DIGIDICED and published by Asmodee Digital, and it plays phenomenally well on the screen, too, if you like a board game experience. The game can be played with 1 to 5 players, against the computer AI’s of various difficulty or with your friends in multiplayer. If your friends don’t have the game, you can also play against clans from all over the world in online mode.
Isle of Skye is very accessible standing at €9,99 and you can get the same award-winning gameplay at your screen, as well. If you’re a fan of tile-laying board games, this could be the right title for you!
