Joker Top Grossing R-rated Movie

Joker is officially the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time

Joker, the recent Todd Philips’ masterpiece about one of the most celebrated comic book villains of all time, just surpassed all other competitors and took the throne as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. The charge was lead by Deadpool 2 and 1, who were on #1 and #2 respectively, but now the top 5 from the list are as follows:

  1. Joker – $849,083,522 (still in theatres around the world)
  2. Deadpool 2 – $785,046,920
  3. Deadpool – $782,612,155
  4. The Matrix Reloaded – $742,128,461
  5. It – $700,381,748

An R-rated label is given to a movie that is assessed to show content that is unsuitable for children at or under the age of seventeen. The label is given by the Motion Picture Association of America and the official label says: “Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian”. Joker is definitely in this category, although maybe even not suitable with parents altogether. Without any spoilers, it is sufficient to say that the movie shows mental illness problems quite vividly and contains graphic violence, portrayed with almost artistic intent. Although, it’s not the portrayed violence that’s the target of most critics of this movie made by Todd Philips, it’s the underlying message that it implies according to many who emphasize how potentially dangerous the idea can be.

The synopsis for Joker focuses on Arthur Fleck and the life he tries to lead as a mentally-troubled individual, who feels the mistreatment and disregard of the society on his own skin and bones. Mentally-troubled, however, barely describes it as the movie is a downward spiral towards a chaos of violence, degradation, and breakdowns, which tries to explain how someone like the character of Joker could come to be.

Only three weeks after its release the movie broke the records and is now the #1 R-rated movie, leading over Deadpool 2 by almost $70M, and still counting. The movie is also the highest-grossing movie of all time featuring DC characters in India, beating Aquaman, but Aquaman is still the global leader in that arena. The official list of DC universe highest-grossing movies worldwide looks like this currently:

  1. Aquaman – $1.148 billion
  2. Dark Knight Rises – $1.085 billion
  3. The Dark Knight – $1.005 billion
  4. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $873.6 million
  5. Joker – $849,083,522

It goes without saying that the movie still has miles to go for its third week of showing and will potentially surpass a couple of other titles and rank on several other lists. Also, the commercial success of a movie may be depending on several additional factors that are not necessarily affecting the experience of watching it and the data might not be as relevant to the viewer. But, it is definitely another big victory for comic book movies which just goes to show that it is safe to do them closer to the darker original source material, even though Joker draws from several comic books but creates its own story and world, independent of other DC superhero movies and other iterations of the character.
