League of Legends coming to mobiles next year

League of Legends mobile release date is set for 2020, according to Riot Games, along with console editions as well. The exact term they used at their promo poster is ‘starting 2020’, so it may not all come in a single package and it may be a process that takes some time, even after it starts. However, the company also unveiled several other new games, slated for a 2020 release, which helps build up our confidence and trust in the firm.

Riot has made billions in the past decade, not just for developing LoL but for creating a prestigious eSports league that has the most lucrative of awards out there. Thus, the company’s influence and reputation knows no bounds today, as their game and eSports league features people from all over the globe. In the past few years, it seems as if the company wants to shift its focus away from League of Legends a bit, meaning that they do not want it to be the sole breadwinner.

This means new games, of course, as Riot unveiled several and they will begin launching them next year, but many of them will be set in the LoL universe and feature the game’s characters. So, the company is only spreading out their focus, but they are in no way reducing the attention LoL gets. In fact, LoL animated series is in the works, and its release date will be announced alongside these upcoming games, soon…ish. There is also a documentary financed by Riot called League of Legends: Origins, which is already out on Netflix.

Some of the next titles coming from Riot include a Card game, another MOBA, an open-world MMO (if we understood correctly), a fighting game, an eSports simulator which is said to be like a version of Football Manager but for LoL, and more. There will also be some upcoming games that won’t feature any connection to LoL. Thus far, there is a project designated as “Project A”, said to be a tactical shooter, set on Earth, but no further details are known.

League of Legends daily player count reaches about 8 million, according to the announcement from Riot. After ten years, the game is still very popular, but the fans have also asked for more titles and thus, they want to oblige. Marc Merrill, the co-founder of the company, said:

“We have the benefit of being able to be long term. We don’t have to go push out a product to meet some quarterly deadline or revenue target or whatnot.” –Marc Merrill

Mr. Merrill also said that the company needs to adjust its focus and has taken Hearthstone as an example, which made him think again about his company’s goals. This is also the reason why they are going with a card game, as Merrill says. Riot is owned by Tencent, which is one of the most successful companies in the world. They are based in China and, besides gaming, they are into various other branches of entertainment and tech industry.
