News that PUBG Corp and Capcom are working together will certainly make a lot of people happy. More precisely, those who love PUBG and Resident Evil 2, but also it will give the chance to those who are not so familiar with the Capcom’s hit game to get acquainted with this iconic franchise. The crossover event will apply to the PUBG Mobile game and was announced on Twitter of the Japanese Resident Evil account Biohazard (the name by which the franchise goes in the Land of the Rising Sun).
“[PUBG MOBILE] × [Resident Evil Re: 2] collaboration decided! The world’s most popular mobile game and survival horror monument. What kind of novel play can the combination of two super-IPs produce?” says the tweet posted on December 2 along with the teaser trailer.
Now, the trailer only shows zombie footage from Resident Evil 2 and thus we can’t make any substantiated assumption what to expect. But with these two teaming up, it will be epic! Namely, PUBG is perfect for some zombie action and to make the battle royale even harder for the players. But this is not the first time these decomposing creatures joined a popular franchise to spice the things up. Just remember Blackout Mode in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 where the presence of zombies as NPCs you have to battle is closely connected to the Mystery Box locations. And of course, Fortnite did it first with Halloween event full of the walking dead waiting for players to come their way.
Many will probably be a little bit confused why this is only PUBG Mobile event since Resident Evil 2 is currently being developed for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. However, the mobile version of the popular battle royale game has done something similar before. Namely, the game hosted an event called Mission: Impossible – Fallout in August which is tied to the Tom Cruise hit movie out in theatres at the time and Suicide Squad.
And let’s not forget that PUBG Mobile was announced as the most popular game on Google Play for 2018. So this makes this new partnership between PUBG Corp and Capcom a potentially lucrative deal and maybe even something that the publisher Tencent Games could exploit in the Ring of Elysium sometime in the future.
There is still no announcement on the date when to expect this crossover, but since PUBG Mobile Twitter post said that “Something is coming very soon” with a hashtag #pubgmobilexre2 it might be that we won’t have to wait too long. But, while we all hope that there will be zombie mode, for now, it is more likely that PUBG Mobile will feature Resident Evil skins.
Resident Evil 2 is scheduled to launch on January 25 next year and this would be a nice way to boost its hype. After all, this is a remake of the classic PlayStation game that the younger generation may not be so well familiar with or is through the Paul W.S. Anderson movie series featuring Mila Jovovich. Especially with the news that this movie franchise is under reboot which was announced in 2017.
With millions of players, PUBG Mobile will certainly be able to create quite a promotion for the new and rebooted Resident Evil 2. But, if the zombies come into the gameplay, this battle royale game fans will also have quite an excitement on their hands. Who knows, maybe Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy the protagonists of the Resident Evil 2 will pop up as NPCs. As we said, the details on the crossover are not available yet, but we do look forward to this event.
