Octopath Traveler

Square Enix Is Releasing a Prequel to Octopath Traveler for Mobile

During summer last year, Nintendo published Octopath Traveler, a turn-based RPG developed by Square Enix for Switch. The game was a huge success selling more than a million copies in barely a month after its release. And now, Square Enix is preparing a prequel to the game for iOS and Android devices to be released in Japan.

Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent or Octopath Traveler: Tairiku no Haisha in Japanese is planned to hit Apple and Google stores later this year. The game will feature the same 16-bit graphic like the original and contrary to what fans hope, it will not be ported to Switch. This announcement arrived a month after a Q4 2018 financial report for Square Enix showed that Octopath Traveler was one of its most successful games last year.

Based on the trailer, there are more party members in the prequel than the original game. Namely, Octopath Traveler allowed for max four players, while in Conquerors of the Continent you can have a party of eight members. But bear in mind, that game will be single player and developer doesn’t have plans to add multiplayer at all or just yet. However, when it comes to the fighting system, it’s basically the same and will feature weakness-based combat style. The story is set Osterra and follows three conquerors so players will be able to choose one of those characters to lead and build during the game, while the goal is to defeat the great evil and save the world.

Square Enix is no stranger to mobile gaming. This developer and publisher have already released games for mobile devices which are ports and spinoffs of its popular games like Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. While Western fans may be disappointed for not getting a localized version of Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent, they should actually be very happy about this development. Since Square Enix only creates mobile games for its popular series, this may be the sign that there will be more games of the Octopath Traveler franchise.

Early-access registration is available now and you can follow the procedure here.

Octopath Traveler is an old school Japanese RPG that came out as an exclusive Nintendo Switch title. The game won Nintendo Game of the Year Award at Golden Joystick Awards and Mobile/Handheld Title of the Year at Australian Games Awards. This year, it’s nominated for several categories at three events like Art Direction, Fantasy at NAVGTR Awards and Excellence in Art at SXSW Gaming Awards.

The game takes place in Orsterra, just like Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent is as well. One of the most praised elements of the game was music, so players of the smartphone version should also expect some beautiful scores. Octopath Traveler was so popular in Japan that stores twice ran out of stock and Square Enix apologized two times to the players for this oversight.

If you didn’t play Octopath Traveler yet, it’s available for $59.99 on Nintendo Store, or you can wait for the smartphone game to come out which will be later this year.
