Tank games seem to go through the renaissance on the mobile platforms, with dozens of interesting games for iOS and Android. In that situation, it’s pretty hard to make a game which would differentiate from others and offer something innovative and fun to the players. Is Tanks a Lot a game like that? Let’s see.
On the first glance, Tanks a Lot looks like all other arcade tank games for mobile. The design of tanks is minimalistic, with toy-like appearance, that you can change according to your own affinities. The gameplay is quite simple too, you and your two friends are fighting in the arena against another team of players in 3 vs 3 battles. The winner is decided by the apparent criteria of who died less. The gameplay is dynamic and fast-paced and has some common elements with MOBA games like an isometric perspective and parts of the map that render players invisible.
There’s a building aspect in this game too. You can build your own tank from the available parts. There are various types of cannons, rockets, laser weapons, but there are also various types of tracks, skirts, hulls, and turrets to choose from. By playing and winning you can unlock new parts and replace the old ones in order to build a perfect tank.
Tank games can be somewhat boring, but this game definitely isn’t, because it adds some elements that make the gaming experience more strategic. It reminds us of the Air Wings, which is a multiplayer paper airplane dogfight game for iOS. Interestingly enough, the game opened up new strategic possibilities by deciding not to pursue realism like the most tank games out there.
This game is not that perfect, though. There are two major flaws that kind of undermine the good foundation of the game. The first one is the control method since the game has a dire need for a floating movement stick. A static stick is pretty hard to use because if your finger moves off as you play you will stop moving and will become a way easier target that way.
The game is also a bit unfair about the progression. You lose around 45 trophies for losing and only gain back 20 when you win. The chest system doesn’t reward you for actually playing more than 5 minutes, it takes 1 round won to get a chest and it takes 3 hours to open the most basic chest without gems. There is only 4 chest slots and being that they are so easy to get, there are some unopened chests from the first league while players are in the fifth. We understand this was done to extend the playing time, but for some players, it’s borderline insulting.
Tanks a Lot is a game in which you won’t hear a title expression a lot from the players, due to the gameplay hinders and deliberate forceful extension of the playing time. However, if you’re in for a quick and fun tank game, this might be a good app to try.
