Xiaomi released the second generation of their gaming phone, Black Shark 2, and it will come with some surprising additional features. Xiaomi is known for their intentions of having a phone in every possible category and with the growing trend of gaming-centric mobile phones. like Razer Phone 2 and ASUS RoG phone. Xiaomi delivered more than a capable competitor in form of Black Shark 2, also known as Helo.
It’s quite apparent that Xiaomi upgraded the original Black Shark phone a lot, which could be seen if we look at the display. It’s a bit bigger and way better, boasting 6 inches and 2160 x 1080 resolution, all that in AMOLED quality (comparing to the LCD panel of the predecessor).
Concerning the specifications, this phone is the absolute unit, with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor (backed by vapor-chamber cooling for smoother gameplay) and up to 10GB of RAM (LPDDR4X, 1,866MHz). With that, there is 256GB of storage and a 4,000mAh battery to keep you playing longer, which can be charged with QuickCharge 3.0.
It also has a pair of front-facing speakers, which is great for all sorts of entertainment. Helo has a combination of 12MP 1.25um and 1.75 + 20MP main cameras which are now a line vertically along the middle, right above the rear fingerprint reader. The front camera is 20MP 1um f/2.2. Another feature you’ve seen before is the Shark mode switch on the left. When you flip it you will be faced with a user interface and various system settings to optimize your gaming experience.
Much like its counterparts, Razer Phone 2 and ASUS Rog phone, Helo features a logo on the back as well, which is customizable and with backlights, although the choice of the colors is limited to 8 instead of 16.8 million. As a consolation, you can control the brightness and pick other blinking patterns. On both sides of the phone, there are short LED strips, which were supposed to react to gameplay, but the prototype model could only activate them when you switch the gaming mode on.
However, the most interesting feature that comes along with Helo phone is the Bluetooth game controller, known as Joy Con. When you place the phone in the protection case, you can slide the controller down the incision on the top side of the phone. This is supposed to give more precise thumb control (plus the left shoulder trigger button), while simultaneously you’ll get more viewable screen space.
Unfortunately, the Black Shark Helo is available in China only, for now. The starting price for 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage version he’s around $460, while the “sports edition” with 10 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of storage will cost you around $605. The later version includes a right-hand controller as well, but it won’t arrive until December the 12th, which means it probably won’t be the first 10GB RAM device to arrive in the market. That honor will probably have the upcoming Xiaomi Mix 3 or a variant of Oppo’s Find X instead. Nevertheless, the gaming phone market got another worthy contestant, and we really hope it will justify the excitations.
